PhantomTweak
Great pictures of the Texan! Love that reflective, yet dirty, bare metal. Put it a Navy livery, call it an SNJ, and that's what my father flew as an FI in the Navy many moons ago... Before the incident at the change of command in Pensacola, fueled by a lot of alcohol, that got him asked, quietly of course, to possibly resign his commission and depart the Navy. NOW... Thanks for the great post! Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! arnakkian
Must echo the above. Plus the sound of these things as they fly overhead. There is little else IMO that rules the skies like the prop growl these guys throw out. Uich gwennen na'wanath ah na dhin, an uich gwennen na ringyrn ambar hen. KCD
There are a few aircraft whose design is timeless, the T-6 is one of those, but for engine noise, although the T-6 is wonderful, nothing in the prop world beats the sound of a well wound up Merlin in a Spitfire or Mustang. PhantomTweak
...for engine noise, although the T-6 is wonderful, nothing in the prop world beats the sound of a well wound up Merlin in a Spitfire or Mustang. I love the T-6 sounds, that big old radial just roars. Having said that, though, I have to agree, the sound of the Merlin pushing hard is, in my ears, the tops. It's really unique in the prop world, to my ears. I used to love straining to hear the sound of Bob Hoover's Yellow (I think he called it Ol' Yeller) P-51 approaching from behind the stands to start the Unlimited at Reno. That Merlin, being followed by all those other warplanes, souped up for the Race, was something I'll never forget. They made my guts rumble in sympathy to them as they went overhead, but not very far overhead!! I was always so jealous of him. Not only was he born with wings, it seems, but North American/Rockwell GAVE him that plane! Not only that but all the fuel, maintenance, part, ground crew, you name, was provided him free too. Same with his AC500 (Rockwell Aero Commander (AC-500S)), lucky bugger... Still get a kick out the T-6's engine though. It just roars "POWER!!" :D I always thought it was funny, also, how almost every Zero in an American made movie was a T-6. Once my father pointed that out, when I was a kid, I never looked at a "Zero" the same :pilot: I was lucky enough to have seen a real Zero in a shelter over at MCAS Iwakuni, in Japan when I was there. Neat learning experience. Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! Kdierken
Great pics of another timeless aircraft from the past. Just like the P-51 mustang NAA (North American Aviation) also designed this plane, is the fact that these planes are designed using slide rulers. They are timeless machinery, they have the sleek lines on the ground & air. This plane was a great training aircraft in it's time. I talked to many pilots that fly these planes today, they fly with some ease, love that radial sound when flying overhead. Kenny
PhantomTweak
I had to learn to use a slide-rule when I was in school. Of course, at that time, an electronic calculator took up a room, and used huge disks. Not something the average grade-schooler could bring to school for math class :D Of course there were some really nice, somewhat smaller ones, but they stayed in lunar orbit with the upper half of the LEMs. And were a triffle expensive. I could afford, and was even actually ABLE to carry a slip-stick, though ;p I had a really nice one, with LOTS of features and functions. Bright yellow, with a really cool (IMO) clear slider to use to line things up. Had Trig functions, Algebra, the whole nine yards. Exactly what I needed for math in 8TH grade. In High school, though, the electronic versions were really hitting the market. When I was dating the daughter of an HP employee, I kinda had an "in" to get their newest, but after I graduated and joined the Corps, I got myself a TI-55-II. LED display. Used up batteries suprisingly fast too. When the LCD TI-55-III came out, I was in heaven. I used it extensively in my electronics courses. I still have that puppy, too. I took the battery our, so it wouldn't leak and ruin it, but I can put it back if I ever need it. I even had an E6B I used when I was learning to fly, although there wasn't much call for it in a glider... Sorry, took a short drive down memory lane there. Have fun, everyone!
