Honus
I keep getting these prompts to update to Windows 10 but I don't see it happening based on many reviews I've read of potential problems. I have had FSX for some years with all the addons, AIFP, Airport Design Editor, an entire world of AI traffic that all works perfectly and I'm not giving that up any time soon. Just wondering what some of you are experiencing. Thanks
W2DR
I agree. I see no compelling reason to switch to Windows 10 in the near-term. Someday we'll all have to go there just due to compatibility issues but that's not a problem yet. Most folks have had good luck with FSX and Windows 10 but there are also some real horror stories out there. BTW, if you want to rid your system of all traces of the dreaded Windows-10-do-you-want-to-upgrade-now junk try the GWX Control Panel. Just a couple clicks and the nag screens are gone forever. jorgen.s.andersen
If your system is working fine otherwise, and you're happy with your FSX installation, then don't upgrade. That's my own personal opinion. I had a nice, large installation, just like yours I guess, and then in november upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10, but at the same time also went from an i3 processor to an i7 and also an upgraded graphics card. In january the system developed some sort of glitch, causing me to have to reinstall Windows, and in the process, due to the way UEFI bioses handle hard drives, also had to reformat the drives! So I am in the process of reinstalling FSX and everything from scratch - I have enough to do for a couple of months I guess! The system is running fine now, but I sure could have done without the pain of it all. Jorgen
amberdog1
I had Win 8.1 and went to Win 10. I had to do a clean instal in 10. I have had to .dll issues but after that it runs better after it loads (This is a lot slower that before). I now maintain 25-30fps under win 10 where I was getting around 15fps in Win 8.1. I would recommend uninstalling FSX and all add ons before the upgrade, start with a clean install of FSX. Test that before installing any add-ons. You should be good to go from this. Hope this helps. Also if you are happy using Win 8.1 and have no issues then keep it.:pilot:
Captain Vodka
Not doubting your opinions and report on the win 10 significant increase from previous windows instal but I can't see myself how from win8.1-Win10 would give you a 60-100% increase in frame rates based on just the OS? If that is the case ill be definitely upgrading but I would need some further info on this Any OS architects able to elaborate on this within the forum? jorgen.s.andersen
Based on my own experience, I would agree with Amberdog1. If you want to upgrade to Win 10, consider seriously to uninstall FSX and all the addons, keeping the addons somewhere (USB stick, CD, DVD or other media), then install it after the upgrade. My installation SEEMS to run faster now, but then again I haven't reinstalled everything yet.... Jorgen
zswobbie1
I went from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my i5 laptop that I use for simming. I used the MediaCreationTool.. See here.. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-10-media-creation-tool-create-installation-media-upgrade When I tried to upgrade using the icon in the toolbar, I had hassles. This worked perfectly for me, for my 2x versions of FS9, my P3D (all installed in the default directories) & another FS9 in the root C:\. No issues at all. My UAC settings is right down. I did not have to install or re-install anything. & loading IS a bit faster. You also have 30 days to decide to roll back to your previous operating system. Note Well: DO NOT RESTORE! Windows 10, in Settings, has a function to roll back. This is not the same as restore. I have done this twice, without any losses at all. fsimmer98
I use FSX Steam Edition which is fully compatible with W10. Third party add-ons may or may not be compatible with Steam Edition or W10 though. You can use GWX Control Panel to disable the W10 nagware if you don't want to upgrade. Art Burke
I had an old XP machine that was pretty well loaded up as well with all kinds of flightsim stuff. Saved it for several years without touching it. The sim bug bit again some months back. Dug the PC out and started flying again. After about a month, Murphy showed up. The PC had two drives and I had installed all the sim stuff on the second drive. It died. Took it to the local PC repair joint. The main drive also died. They wanted an arm and a leg to restore/reclaim what they could find. Found a surprisingly cheap (used) copy of FSX at Amazon. Now that I'm flying again, I've been backing stuff up like it's going out of style! At the first sign of trouble, I'll have these drives cloned - with Win 7 - and just keep it off the web! fireartist
Hi, I have just updated to Win 10, but I did a full clean install and then put FSX back on. My old FSX had been on the computer for many years and I was experiencing problems and could not get FS2Crew to work even after I had fantastic online support. it has taken a mammoth task at putting all my addons back on, but a lot of it was easy and I have to say, that now I am finding the sim a lot smoother and holding frame rates for the half v sync setting. I did have to put the UIAutomationdll into the FSX root folder as I was having random crashes, and this has now stopped. So my experience is positive, but as I said it was a huge task at getting everything back on but it seems worth it. i5 3570k oc @ 4.3ghz, 16gb DDR3 Ram, 1TB HDD, GTX 970, 43" 4K Hisense TV , Logitech Yoke and Rudder, Logitech Flight panels. jorgen.s.andersen
I agree. It is indeed a mammoth task to reinstall all the addons, but it does seem worth the trouble. At least so far.... Jorgen
