About that Virtual Reality thing...

This is a post over on the FlyInside forums from a guy who recently tried out virtual reality:

Hey guys! I just wanted to say what an amazing product you have made bringing VR and FSX together. I am currently training for my sport license, and built a sim awhile back so on the days I couldn't fly, I could always practice my flight maneuvers at home. Even though I had 6 monitors running at the same time for my view from the cockpit, I could never get the aspects just right, and when you are practicing things like traffic patterns and ground reference maneuvers, if you can't see what your doing, it all becomes pointless. With Flyinside FSX, I don't need all those monitors, and it almost feels like the real thing. Now I can look out my window and under the wing to get a better view of the runway. As a direct result of this, my traffic patterns have become more precise, and my instructor has really noticed a difference. I am currently building and entirely new system to take advantage of everything Flyinside has to offer. I have my new rift on pre-order, and I want to introduce the leap-motion to complete the experience! I look forward to future updates, and any features you plan on in the future! Keep up the great work!

Take it for whatever you wish, but this person found VR flying to be very powerful to help with training for his sport pilot license. And while I post this to show how useful it can be, it should also be said that it takes a powerful system to run well and the consumer HMDs are considered by some to be quite expensive. The Rift is $599 (HMD and tracking only) and the Vive is $799 (includes tracked controllers and a forward-facing camera so you can see out at will). With both there are additional shipping, tax, and possibly customs charges depending on where you live. And with either, if you don't have a good enough system, you will need to upgrade that because if you can't hit and maintain adequate frame rates, it's not a good experience. But if you can, it's like magic. You are in your aircraft and seeing the flight sim world as if you were actually there.

There are other differences between Rift and Vive besides what are noted above and those differences may mean for each person one is a better choice than the other. Overall, however, they are more similar than different and the prices will probably be almost the same if you include Oculus' tracked controllers (price not announced but anticipated (guessed) to be $150-200). Also, at this time we know that the FlyInside developer has a either a consumer Rift or consumer Rift prototype, is very impressed, and is apparently also picking up some performance gains. We haven't heard how things are going with Vive yet or if he even has one. We may not fully know Vive compatibility until his pre-ordered one arrives first week in April or shortly thereafter. He has said on the FlyInside boards that he believes it should be easy but it wouldn't be fair at this time to present it as a done deal.

So anyway, for those interested, just one person's opinion on what virtual reality meant/means for his flight training experience.

I'm going with PlayStation VR. More games, and should be cheaper hopefully in the $499 range. Also Ace Combat 6 flight sim was promised late last year at the PlayStation Xperience conference.

Even with the "lesser" hardware requirements, Sony is the only VR company that can deliver optimized versions of VR Games from not only their own studios, but third parties.

I think PSVR is going to be really good too. Since it is a hardware monoculture, developers can optimize out the wazoo. Experiences may tend to be a little more arcade-like but that is up to the developers as the hardware just shows what it is given. On the other hand, Gran Turismo ought to be mind blowing. I think you will be really happy with it. Let us know what you think when you get it!

I think traditionally they don't make much if any profit on the hardware and make that up on game pricing.

$399 is a great price and from what I hear the PSVR folks are going to have lots and lots of fun! The demo reel looks really fun and makes PSVR very tempting. I think it's going to be the gateway drug to more power-hungry PC-based VR. Gran Turismo is a launch title and that should be amazing!

Have fun!

The unfortunate part is all these required sensors and controllers that are bidding up the price. Even with the Oculus includes an Xbox controller when most people already have one laying around the house even if they are mainly PC gamer. Sounds like Microsoft got it's toe in there on account of Oculus main game being Microsoft's Minecraft.

I still might put a preorder on the PSVR bundle and wait until November to see if I even have time for this..

Hi Crab,

Yeah, I know what you mean about the controllers. Those looking for flying or driving sims in VR won't be using the tracked or untracked stuff being packaged.

I think in this case, though, among at least the major PC VR HMDs, the Vive has a bit of an advantage since there are some really cool standing and limited walking applications where they fit beautifully. And while they do add some to the price, I doubt it's more than $100. The other part of the price difference between Rift and Vive is the Vive front-facing camera. Very handy for having a quick look around when you need, navigating a keyboard, etc. But with the Vive, you already have the hardware you need to track the controllers since the Lighthouses are needed for the HMD too. With Rift, they have to add another camera which uses another USB 3 port. No real added functionality other than tracked controllers in what will probably be about $150-200 additional.

But I agree - the XBox controller is a waste for a lot of people. Many either already have one or they don't need one but you still get to pay for it. For whatever reason, the Touch controllers aren't ready and won't ship until later. Which is odd for just some switches, LEDs, and plastic in spite of prototypes being shown a year ago.

Well... I have my pre-order in. PS VR it is, Ace Combat, Gran Turismo Sport and the Eagle game will have to do. But mainly I guess I'm more part of the PS4 community these days than PC. So all the podcasts I watch will be talking about that unit giving how sparse PC coverage is. And Day One is all together exciting in itself.
