FSX do not see the runway on landing

Hi,

I am using FS9 for years (decades) got it up to 35GB now with enhanced scenery and new aircraft. I must say I thoroughly enjoy it. BUT plan to use FSX now. And this brings me to a question:

I once downloaded FSX (still got the discs) but was disappointed mainly because in Cockpit (Instrument panel) view you cannot (like in FS9) use Shift and Enter or Shift and Backspace to move the view up and down and to see the runway on landing. To my knowledge in FSX this can be done only in Virtual Cockpit view, so consequently the landing can be done only in VC (Yeah, you need to see the runway when you land!). Well I do not like to fly in Virtual Cockpit because often you do not see the full compliment of instruments there.

This was a showstopper for me and I went back to FS9 where I can move the Cockpit view and see the runway.

Anyone has any opinion on this issue, or is there a way around this?

Many thanks

Peter

Try Ctrl+Q and CTRL+Shift+Q in FSX, 2D panel, to raise & lower the seat.

If you are using the 3D panel & a joystick, you can use the ' hat' to look around..

Googling 'FSX Key assignments' or ' FSX viewpoint adjustments' or 'FSX Seat adjustments' helps. There is a printable template out there, somewhere.

There is also a gauge that you can mount on your 2D cockpit panel that is an up and down seat switch. It might be an FS2004 gauge usable in FSX. I'll do a quick search for it.

DEFAULT KEYS VC COCKPIT EYEPOINT MOVEMENT

(Note: use in conjunction with the zoom keys '-' and '=' to get it looking how you like it)

In the VC cockpit, hold the keys down to slide your eyeballs.

In the 2D cockpit it doesn't work for front view, but works for the other views, push your joystick hat to the view you want and hold it there while adjusting your eyepoint.

SHIFT Enter= Up

SHIFT Backspace=Down

SHIFT CTRL Enter= RIGHT

SHIFT CTRL Backspace= LEFT

CTRL Backspace= Forward

CTRL Enter= Back

Hold CTRL and hit SPACE= Reset

DEFAULT KEYS 2D COCKPIT SEAT RAISE

CTRL Q= Up

CTRL SHIFT Q= Down

(Note: if you've raised the seat and then look out a side window, you'll find the seat has dropped back down when you return to front view which is annoying)

Below: VC cockpit examples using the default FSX Maule near Salisbury Cathedral (England) with Horizon GenX photoscenery, plus Revolution X to add trees and other buildings-

Typical view with the eyepoint raised a bit to look over the nose-

And with the eyepoint slid backwards a bit-

And slid even further back-

Of course, you can pan around 360 degrees for an immersive experience-

You can even slide your VC cockpit eyepoint outside the aircraft to simulate cranking your neck over the side of open cockpit machines to see what's ahead.

And cranked-

In planes with passenger cabins you can slide your VC eyepoint all the way back (and even fly from this position for fun), this is a Junkers 52-

And pan to look out the window-

However, the 2D COCKPIT is completely different from the VC because you can only move your view up and down by raising/lowering the seat. Press and hold the default keys-

CTRL Q= Up

CTRL SHIFT Q= Down

Maule 2D cockpit standard view-

(Incidentally the dials are squashed like this in some planes instead of being circular, I don't know why that is, maybe there's a fix but I can live with it)-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-Maule-2D-seat1_zpsisuhqlln.jpg~original

And with the seat raised to peer over the nose-

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-Maule-2D-seat2_zpsojnqgwxf.jpg~original

(Note- the zoom keys won't make the 2D panel bigger or smaller, they only affect the landscape outside. And in 2D you can't smoothly pan around, the view "jumps" to whatever point of the compass you want)

The one for FS9 is fs9keyref.zip, and for FSX it is fsxcmnds.zip. I think (seldom) that they are both available in the library here, but I may well be mistaken about that. They might be Simviation, Avsim, I don't recall.

Does that help at all?

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

You are using a widescreen monitor to view a program that was designed for 4:3 monitors.

And for a 'One Key' fix for you dilema press the 'W' key (toggles) to change 2D view to mini panel view and after you land press it again to go back to regular 2D view. Use my head.

It's your monitor aspect ratio.

The old FS9 panel bitmaps were made for 4x3 aspect ratio monitors ,

if you load that into a 16x9 aspect ratio monitor the instruments are

stretched horizontally like ovals.

The problem now is that monitors aspect ratios are 4x3 , 16x9 , but

there are a few other aspect ratio monitors available and in use .

What aspect ratio monitor are you using ?

Cheers

Techy talk is not my strong point, all I know is that I use 1360 x 768 resolution for FSX (and most games) because if i use a higher reso like 1920 x 1080 the ingame menu text is too small to read without a magnifying glass.

Also, many other resos make the whole picture seem stretched out or squeezed up horizontally, and for example wheels look squashed instead of circular.

So 1360 x 768 works best for me because it gives good definition, circles are usually circles, and the menu size is easier to read..:)

Aspect ratio is the screen width to length ratio (or vice versa). Mine is a Wide screen using the same resolution as yours. My aspect ratio is 16:9

My big-screen Sony TV is a 52 incher and it has an aspect ratio of 16:9
