I have fs2004 running on XP SP3 but also have Windows 8.1 on another computer. Would like to get it on my PC w/8.1 and wonder if anyone already has it set up and running smoothly on the same platform.

My 8.1 specs are:

Intel Quad Core i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40 GHZ

ACPI x64-based PC

Memory 8063mb (1600) 8.0 GB

Intel HD Graphics

I know not to install it in program files folder but that's about all. Need to know if there are any other tricks to pull it off!

Thanks for any help.

Hello

I see from your posted specs that your would be using onboard graphics.

You should really invest in a dedicated graphics card for tip top performance.

You don't have to spend a fortune either (obviously if you can then even better).

My current PC came with the entry level Radion (240 I think ) card ,and further shock an AMD processor

My current PC runs both X and 9 very well.

My old XP setup (now deceased) was dire in comparison.

Cheers Andy

About two years ago I upgraded a couple of my PCs in the house - from XP to WIN 7. I set the "old" box with XP aside because it was chock-full of FS9 goodies. Drug it out the other day and went flying again - isolated from the internet. Murphy showed up and killed *both* drives in the PC. After 12 laborious hours trying to retrieve data I surrendered, bought FSX, a graphics card for my newer PC and moved on. Some things are a little different, some things have not changed. I sort of miss FSNavigator, but FSCommander is, in some ways, better. But not perfect.

Yes there loads of FS2004 users running the sim on W8.1. There are, however, two issues that you will encounter related to W8.1 that you would not encounter in XP.

The first is User Account Control (UAC) issues. UAC is not part of XP and is designed to make it harder for viruses/malware to make changes to important system files. That is one of the reasons that you install the sim outside of the Programs folder. However, it is worth noting that many users actually run the sim in the default program folder with no issues. I suspect that many of them do so using an Administrator level user account and/or have turned off UAC.

The second issues is more recent and is a result of a policy change made by MS regarding a specific type of Digital Rights Management (DRM) tool to run and is subsequent removal. This caused a lot of problems for W7/8/Vista users at the time but is now well understood to such an extent that it should not be seen as a reason not to install on W7 or 8.1.

The following thread gives details https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?293089-Sim-won-t-load!/page10

Fully read the thread in the link provided to get an ideal of the problem and its remedies. However, as the thread is long the following specific posts give the more essential information - Posts #9 and #18 (by me) gives you all the details you require to decide on how best to use WU on W8, for your own circumstances, and on how to stop the update being automatically re-queued by hiding it. Posts #44 and #46 provide info that I suspect will be the best solution to follow.

Art,

I was following you up to the FSX part? Why sir .... why? Surely you had your FS2004 disks handy ......

It's so sad to see another one travel to the dark place ........

Oh well, more room in the FS2004 for the rest of us!

Slagging of other simmers as usual. It's an individuals choice as to what sim, and indeed OS, they wish to use.

Art,

I know it's sad to lose those old treasures! But look at the brighter side, with FSX you'll see airports & scenery that weren't around when they wrote your older software. And with whatever comes next, you'll probably find even more.

In fact a poster was just lamenting in the FSX thread that DNAS (Asaba Nigeria International) wasn't shown in his copy of FSX. That was probably because DNAS wasn't even started until a couple of years ago & as far as I can tell is still not fully completed.

Without updates, all our data is frozen in time.

We are still using FS9 at our VA, on about 25 PC's & laptops.

It just works on most PC's, & we have combinations of Windows XP, 7, 8.1 & 10.

No need to fiddle around to get things right, more time (& space) to fly, we have different versions of FS9 that include Bill Lyons's Golden Wings, we have local South African scenery & planes that are not available for FSX.

FS9 (still) Rocks!!
