mejjo1989
Hi guys, i'm making the upgrade from FS9 to FSX, I have FSX on my current computer but it doesn't run very well. Within my budget i've found a decent computer and i'm wondering if you guys might be able to share your opinion if it will run FSX well with addons, I'll be using PMDG aircraft and mostly scenery addons. I've seen some videos on youtube of people running the game at very good smooth frames on a 3.4Ghz so i'm thinking the following specs are looking positive to run it well. The system i'm looking to buy is: Depth: 529 MM Height: 530 MM Width: 195 MM Dongle Required: N Graphics: GTX 960 Hard Drive Storage: 2 Tb Processor: i7-4790 RAM Memory: 8 GB Wifi Enabled: Y Intel Core i7-4790 processor 3.6GHz up to 4GHz max frequency Haswell CPU 2TB SATA 7200rpm harddrive 120GB Solid State Drive 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM Intel B85 Chipset GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card Windows 10 2x USB 3.0 (front panel); 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0 (back panel)
mejjo1989
I did find another one that i looked at which was slightly cheaper. Intel® Core™ i5-4460 processor 12Gb RAM 2Tb storage Nvidia GTX745 4Gb dedicated graphics DVD-RW drive Windows 8.1 80-2.11 b/g/n WiFi; Bluetooth 4.0 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, SD card reader Keyboard and mouse included Acer Aspire TC-705 desktop PC
evm
Buy the first one. If that i5 is only slightly cheaper, then it is a bit of a ripoff. Btw "..videos on Utube showing smooth graphics...": you are aware that you can easily fake that by recording the sim at reduced speed and accelerating the result in post processing? At the very least you cut out all the stuttering parts in post to improve the overall look. And use the best parts of multiple recordings to form one good looking one. These methods of post processing and faking reality have been good practice for 100 years, why should it be any different now when things are so much easier in the digital world. W2DR
I agree. Buy the first one. Much depends on your definition of "run FSX well with addons" but I think you'll be fine. Things will be still be a bit tough with the PMDG's in the high-density scenery and airports but all of us have that problem to one extent or another. The key is to not think too much about the framerate and just enjoy the flight. mejjo1989
I am looking to purchase the first one, I've just had a thought, let me just post my current specs to see if you could compare to see if i will have much difference in FSX when buying the PC.. At present i can fly PMDG 777 but if i go to any addon airport its virtually impossible to play with how jumpy it is. My current specs are: 6GB RAM AMD A8-5500 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 3.20Ghz Windows 8.1 Nvidia Ge Force GT
W2DR
While it's very hard (impossible?) to quantify, I think the difference will be significant. Here are a couple of comparisons which may help. While the second does not specifically list the 4790 I think it makes the point. http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/298/AMD_A8-Series_A8-5500_vs_Intel_Core_i7_i7-4790.html http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A8-5500+APU Plus, you'll have the advantage of a better GPU which will could also be a performance booster. Mushbeeguy
Forgive my opinion, but you may wish to get as large a ssd as you can. In the Alienware series the SSD is a PCI-E and difficult to upgrade (finding a larger OEM drive) I have a 256g and dearly wished I grabbed the 512g version. CptCaveman
i7 all the way. I have had an i7 for a couple of years now and its supremely fast. I highly recommend them. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Rupert
i7 all the way. I have had an i7 for a couple of years now and its supremely fast. I highly recommend them. I'm a big i7 fan as well. In fact I have two installed in computers right now. However if a i5 has a higher native clock speed IMHO, the i5 is better for FSX than a i7 with a slower clock. Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

The i7 4790 is 4.00 GHZ & the i5 4460 is 3.2 GHZ I strongly suggest you'll be much happier with 4 GHZ so go with the i7. If the reverse were true, I'd recommend the i5.
