I did that and found nothing, posted this thread and all was revealed, should have stopped the thread then apologies.

No apologies necessary. Think of the bright side ..... your post count was increased and you practiced your typing skills!

..........I guess something in the 4th CD doesn't allow the game to run on Windows 10...........

Not exactly - it is a 'coded switch' that supports a type of software authentication, in this case DRM (Digital Rights Management), within the OS that forces a requirement to check that the FS install is valid - in this case that cd#4 is in the drive.

The problem is that W10 is distributed with the 'coded switch' for DRM support disabled. Support for the same DRM type was 'disabled' in W7/8/8.1 and Vista via a patch issued as a Windows update (WU). This was identified and discussed extensively in this thread - (https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?293089-Sim-won-t-load!/page10&highlight=sim+load).

Whilst, in the main, the thread is aimed at W7/8/8.1/Vista users, it has relevance to W10 users (if they ignore any post regarding the specific WU). It gives all the information required for a FS2004 user to get 'flyin' again using a number of methods, including that mentioned by you.

Regards

Brian

If you are running windows7 it is probably due to a windows update kb3086255.

Do a google search to find out more. Removing the update will allow FS9 to run, but you need to be aware of the security implications.

Have you installed the sim inside the Program Files folder? If so then reinstall it to somewhere like C:\FS9 or C:\FS2004.

Full re-install in FS2004 folder - ran FS9.1 update - it worked, added fs9.1 no-disc, it worked - fires up opening screen then black screen - seen item about having same game/monitor res. How?

If you are getting black screened before you do anything, then I doubt it is a resolution mismatch.

Normally, you would change the resolution in the Settings/Display/Hardware option of FS2004. However, here is a process to get FS2004 and the system resolution matched, assuming you cant get into the FS2004 settings menu.

1) Start/Control Panel/Display/Change Resolution. This will tell you the current system resolution.

2) Next you want to get into the FS9.cfg file, which is probably hidden, so: Start/Control Panel/Folder Options and on the View tab, select "Show hidden files, folders, or drives". Click Apply and OK.

3) Locate the FS9.cfg file - it will be in Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9, where User is your user name. Alternatively, just type FS9.cfg in the Search Programs and Files box of the start menu and access the file from there.

4) Make up backup copy of the FS9.cfg file.

5) Open the FS9.cfg file using Notepad, and locate the section [DISPLAY.Device. (your video card)] In that section, change the Mode= to match your system as in 1) above, with x32 tacked on the end. For example, Mode=1280x1024x32. Save the file.

6) Go back and reset the Folder Options to what it was before you changed it in 2) above.

But there is a catch! If you've done a fresh clean install of FS2004, the FS9.cfg file is NOT generated until the program (FS9) is run.

I would like to thank all of you that helped me out with getting FS9 set up in win 10. Found a start in safe mode button, got in running and it did the rest itself. Then was able to set it all up including my Nvidia 8200 card works 100%. Also have Steam FS running so no lack of fyling now. Again THANKS to all.
