ednixon
Been running FSX for a number of years, getting fed up with this problem. When taxiing, it 'feels' like the nose wheel response lags behind the control, making it difficult to anticipate when to start or end a turn or stay anywhere close to the yellow line. Once a turn is established, when I neutralize the control the turn continues for a bit. Seems like there should be a lot less lag in turn response, if any. Can't see much if any difference from one plane to another. Any comments, suggestions?
il88pp
Fps low on ground. (shift z). Reduce traffic and other settings. Fps around 20+ should be fine. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ScatterbrainKid
FSX and FS2004 runways have always been notoriously slippy like ice at faster speeds even on warm dry days, so the only thing I can think of is that you might be taxiing a shade too fast, and a slower speed might therefore give the nosewheel more "bite". aeroone
ednixon: my sentiments are the same, it often feels to me like the pedals are connected to the nosewheel with elastic bands, such that there's the delayed steering effect you describe. However, I have recently installed the (free) Aermacchi MB 326 (a light military jet, it's excellent I think), and I have noticed that the steering on that feels more direct, for me anyway. I wish I knew how they achieved that!
CptCaveman
Afaik this is because of the way FSX controls the aircraft. Rather than a 1:1 direct control system its a response time based system. That is to say, it always accelerates movements to achieve a smooth response. For example you can hold a turn on the nose wheel and it will start the turn and then increase the turn rate consistently until its at its full turn rate. This is the main cause of the over-under steering on the ground. The acceleration of the inputs means that holding a steady turn is awkward at best, and gives you a "rubber band" feeling when taxing. IIRC there is a mod in the files section that changes the controls to a 1:1 direct input. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
keefpee
Just been having difficulty with my WIP project with taxying, its a taildragger but I think I've found a compromise by juggling with the values in the .air file in section 1101 Yaw section, viz; Cn_dr Yaw moment rudder control; Cn_r Yaw rate damping, as well as increasing the Yaw MoI in the aircraft.cfg. I should think it should read across to a nosewheel job. Ground speed & throttle can affect the end result too! Good luck, but dont forget to save the originals before changing anything! ednixon
Thanks guys... I see reference to 'the files' and later specifically to aircraft.cfg. Is that cfg file where I might find the option to enter 1:1?
mrzippy
Thanks guys... I see reference to 'the files' and later specifically to aircraft.cfg. Is that cfg file where I might find the option to enter 1:1? Good question! I think CptCaveman needs to expand on that statement. I tried looking for anything to do with steering effectiveness and came up empty. Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!
alexzar14
Yes, and the performance varies aircraft to aircraft. The one ideal aircraft that taxis perfectly is PMDG 777, that's it. You press a pedal a little bit, it turns a little bit (the radius is wide). You press harder - the radius decreases. You release the pedal - the airplane stops turning with no delays! So apparently it is programmed into the plane but most developers don't care about the ground handling part.
CptCaveman
Good question! I think CptCaveman needs to expand on that statement. I tried looking for anything to do with steering effectiveness and came up empty. Sorry I try so many mods that I have a hard time keeping track of what's what. But I do know for certain the mods there, as I tried it myself a few weeks ago but it wasnt my "cupa tea" and I couldn't be bothered editing it to make it so. Its not a "steering" mod in so much as its a complete mod of the entire control system to direct input. IIRC it actually edits the controls xml not the aircraft themselves. il88pp
Add stick_sensitivity_mode=0 to the [Controls] section of the fsx.cfg [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
CptCaveman
Add stick_sensitivity_mode=1 to the [Controls] section of the fsx.cfg I do believe that is the mod I was thinking of. Thanks for that. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ednixon
It's agreed, it's not a serious part of flying, but it is rather important before you get to the runway. I wind up driving all over grass and through signs. It does seem a bit ironic that most training begins with steering the plane on the ground and getting used to the rudder pedals. And then in the sim you pretty much can't do it!
il88pp
Sorry, I made an error there. What you should add to the: [CONTROLS] section is: stick_sensitivity_mode=0 (so not 1 as I said earlier.) That gives much better control. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
