solved the slow FPS rate, but am I safe??

I had 12 fps average (8-14) with PMDG 777 at EGLL by Aerosoft, not limited to this scenery but just a common example.

I have a 4.0 4790K with ASRock Z97 OCFormula board, I went to bios and selected load optimized CPU OC setting, enabled it, and selected the lowest setting which was 4.5. The FPS rate problem was gone, I get 18 (worst) to 23 fps on approach and on the taxiways of EGLL facing the terminal buildings with a pmdg 777. Any risks? The bios says "do it at your own risk and expense". My cooler is Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO air-cooled. Will this do? Do I need to replace it with other?

Also, I've read that there is "turbo" mode that operates the CPU at 4.4 GHz by default with no set up or special cooler required, but I don't see it in my bios... Please comment.

The turbo mode should be automatic if the BIOS is default. And if default, it might

be slowing way down at idle. A lot depends on how the BIOS is set as far as the

C-state, etc settings. You may already have been peaking near 4.4 unless you had

it locked down at a steady speed. 4.5 ghz should be a piece of cake for the usual

4790k as long as it stays fairly cool. Probably doesn't even need the voltage upped..

I've always avoided cranking the voltage when OC'ing. That's an easy to cause mayhem

unless you really watch things.

Well, I backed off on the sliders and that was not as bad as I thought it would be...then I took off the side panel on my computer and I have not had a crash or a problem with FSX in a very very long time unless I did something stupid.....and I listened to folks on this site who have said similar things.....FSX is still the best and I have all the plat forms...al v

There is a setting in the ASRock BIOS that says something like "multicore enhancement". Enable that and you'll have 4.4Ghz across all four cores. No need to OC the 4790k - it's just not worth the temp increase for an extra 200-300 Mhz. To measure the temperatures I like RealTemp https://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ . Your temps running FSX will probably be somewhere in the 50-60C range. Anything below 70C is fine. Unless there is cooling problem you should never see a temp above 75C.

Thanks W2DR. Yes the temp is in the range you mentioned, which is good for my present heatsink but I rather follow your professional (indeed) advise and do the Multicore enhancement - I did see it in the bios and and it was disabled.

I flew pmdg 737 fsdt KJFK to FlyTampa CYYZ, generally performance at this airports was greatly increased to about 20 fps at both airports, 20+ over NY area, but it deteriorated on approach to rwy 33L at CYYZ to very low 14 fps, this must've been some scenery issue, no idea... once over the runway, the performance went up to 20-24 and remained at that. I assume that flying this approach prior to enabling the "multicore enhancement" would leave me with worst performance still. So the bottom line, there are some heavy situations in FSX requiring more hardware power. Sad thing the Cannonlake release is being moved to 2017.

I know running Vector there are places where I start to bog down a bit.. The LAX

area is one.. Maybe the JFK area.. But I can only run my 4790 at a constant 3.8 ghz.. :(

I could run it auto and let it go to 4.0 ghz, but after testing I found a constant 3.8 was

slightly better.

I tested the default scenery at LAX using one of my other copies, and the frame rate

was pretty good. So it's mainly Vector that bogs mine in those areas. But I am running

all the options.. IE: all roads, bridges, etc, etc..

The moral.. you can never have too manly a puter when it comes to FSX.. ;)

I am still running only the onboard video. I don't know how much a better video card

would help with that. Likely some, but wouldn't really expect an earthshaking difference.

May be Vector. I have few options only, like primary roads and beaches, the rest not only disturbs performance but causes OOMs.

I think the quality and complexity of addons has reached its potential limit for FSX, from now on it will only be an evolution rather than a revolution. The hardware on the other hand will be catching up so I don't share the pessimism :) Another 5 years and it will be possible to use any addon combination and have 20+ fps rate.

VAS? I gave up on Vector options (bridges, railroads, electric cable poles...) and I never had OOMs again. Shall I decide to fly a Piper 180 I will bring the options back, don't need it for airliner flying.

What year is it? No matter. I keep seeing this: You buy a $800 computer from a 'retailer' (no matter what OS), you take it home, install FSX and get 12 fps. You buy a $1500 computer (again, from a 'retailer') take it home, install FSX and get 12 fps. You then buy a $5000 computer (from a 'retailer') take it home, install FSX and get 12 fps. Whaaaaaa?

You fire up your rig, and you see all kinds of programs running in task bar. Messenger, SKYPE, Google Maps, Paint, etc. Nice you say? HELLO: Your PC is BLOATED and FAT. You need a 'Lean & Mean' machine to run FSX.

So you don't do anything about the BLOATING and decide to go tweak your rig using BIOS 'features' and expect 'performance'? Get real. Remove all that 'junk' running in background and disable unneeded processes. I only have 21 processes running and get 30 fps (locked at 30 fps) almost everywhere I go.

HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE: You get a PC with outdated (ie: 2012) motherboard drivers (ie: chip set drivers) and expect to get 30 fps at LAX? Update your chip set drivers (which also involves what the BIOS can do) OR ELSE. So, by inference, your video card drivers will ALSO be out dated so you SHOULD update those too-FOR BEST RESULTS. (NOTE: skip these 2 'parts' if you only want 12 fps - CHEESH!).

Did you tweakyour FSX cfg? I used Bojote's online tweak and played with removing what I thought I didn't need but put it back if things did not IMPROVE. Then I set it and fogot it. Go fly.

In my case, I was having VAS problems due to running a 32 bit OS. I don't see that

now that I'm using a 64 bit OS. And I'm running the NGX with all Vector settings max,

and all FSX scenery settings max. So if I bog at LAX, I have a decent excuse. lol..

But OOM's are pretty much a thing of the past here with what I'm running.
