FS5/FSFS Howard Hughes 1B Racer The Hughes 1B Racers were both record holders. This plane (the standard winged one) flew from Burbank, Calif. to Newark, N.J. in 7 hrs. 28 min. 25 sec. on 1/19/1937 for the U.S. Transcontinental Speed Record. The plane with short wing span captured the 3 km record with a flight on 9/13/1935 at a speed of 352.388 mph. Engine was a modified P&W Twin wasp pushed to 900 hp. By Jerry Arzdorf.
