This repaint bundle shows USAAF WW2 Europe theatre Curtiss-Wright C-46A-20-CU Commando 41-24683 and Curtiss-Wright C-46D-10-CU Commando 44-77575.
Both Commandos are assigned on 24th. March 1945 to Operation Varsity, on a mission to take paratroopers of the 17th Airborne Division, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment and drop them over Wesel, Germany behind the river Rhine line.
41-24683:
C/n 26604. Delivered from the Curtiss-Wright factory in Buffalo, NY, in Septembr 1943. Assigned to Air Transport Command Domestic Wing, 3rd Ferrying Group based at Romulus AAF, MI. Today KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
After World War II, 41-24683 was transferred to RFC Facility in bad condition. Stored at Bush Field, GA. Assigned to the Warner Robins Air Materiel Area based at Robins AFB, GA. in July 1948. Was stripped of parts and broken up in January 1949.
44-77575:
C/n 32971. Delivered from the Curtiss-Wright factory in Buffalo, NY, in December 1944. Assigned to the 9th Air Force, 52nd Troop Carrier Wing, 313th Troop Carrier Group, 48th Troop Carrier Squadron based at Grevillers-Achiet, France. Marked "Z7-W". Arrived France in early 1945.
During takeoff from Grevillers-Achiet on 24th. March 1945, the left engine faltered due of ignition issues, but the aircraft continued its sortie. During the drop, the aircraft was hit by several 20 mm and 40 mm flak rounds and machine gun bullets, damaging the flight controls. The crew managed to take the aircraft back to Grevillers, but they ground looped on landing. Nobody was injured. Was temporarily repaired and ferried back to the USA.Today, 44-77575 still exist. Honey Girl rests at the Castle AFB Museum at Atwater CA.
