About This File
Founded in 1132 by 12 Cistercian monks, the monastery grew rapidly. Around 1300 the monastery reached its peak size with 140 monks and maybe 500 lay brothers. But at the same time, the abbey had incurred debts - just like modern start-ups growing too fast. There were problems like an epidemic of sheep scab and attacks by the Scots. The monks were in severe financial problems. In the mid 14th century, the black death caused a great reduction in population and made it difficult to recruit new lay brothers for manual labour. At the end, the abbey had shrunk almost to the size it had, when it started - 14 monks, three lay brothers and the abbot.
This scenery replaces the house occupying the site of the abbey church in the default scenery with a more realistic church model.
