About Drzewiecki Design - KDCA Washington National

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (IATA: DCA, ICAO:KDCA, FAA LID: DCA), is located in Arlington, Virginia, next to theborder of Washington, D.C. It is the smaller of two airports operatedby the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority that serve theNational Capital Region around Washington. The airport is 5 miles (8.0km) from downtown Washington D.C.. The airport's original name wasWashington National Airport. Congress adopted the present name tohonor President Ronald Reagan in 1998. The airport served almost 24million passengers in 2019.

Flights into and out of the airport are generally not allowed toexceed 1,250 statute miles (2,010 km) in any direction nonstop, in aneffort to send coast-to-coast and overseas traffic to WashingtonDulles International Airport, though there are 40 slot exemptions tothis rule. Planes are required to take unusually complicated paths toavoid restricted and prohibited airspace above sensitive landmarks,government buildings, and military installations in and aroundWashington, D.C., and to comply with some of the tightest noiserestrictions in the country.

The airport's small size constrains its capacity, but ReaganNational currently serves 98 nonstop destinations. Reagan is a hub forAmerican Airlines. The airport has no United States immigration andcustoms facilities; the only scheduled international flights at theairport are those from airports with U.S. Customs and BorderProtection preclearance facilities, which generally encompassesflights from major airports in Canada and from some destinations inthe Caribbean. Other international passenger flights to theWashington, D.C., area use Washington Dulles International Airport orBaltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Thereare currently five scheduled international routes, which are to citiesin Canada, the Bahamas, and Bermuda.

The airport opened June 16, 1941, just before U.S. entry into WorldWar II. Until 1946 nonstop airline flights didn't reach beyond NewYork, Detroit, Cincinnati, Memphis, Atlanta and Jacksonville. In 1946Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Miami were added; nonstops reached Denverin 1951 and Los Angeles in 1954. The April 1957 Official Airline Guideshows 316 weekday departures. Jet flights began in April 1966(727-200s were not allowed until 1970). In 1974 the airport's keycarriers were Eastern (20 destinations), United (14 destinations aftersubsuming Capital) and Allegheny (11 destinations).

Reagan National Airport has some of the strictest noiserestrictions in the country. In addition, due to security concerns,the areas surrounding the National Mall and U.S. Naval Observatory incentral Washington are prohibited airspace up to 18,000 feet (5,500m). Due to these restrictions, pilots approaching from the north aregenerally required to follow the path of the Potomac River and turnjust before landing. This approach is known as the RiverVisual. Similarly, flights taking off to the north are required toclimb quickly and turn left. The "River Visual" is only possible witha ceiling of at least 3,500 feet (1,100 m) and visibility of 3 statutemiles (4.8 km) or more. There are lights on the Key Bridge, TheodoreRoosevelt Bridge, Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George MasonMemorial Bridge to aid pilots following the river.
