Opening as a PZL helicopter factory in Swidnik, the airportwas converted into passenger use, where it sees on average, half amillion passengers a year. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-01.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-09.jpgLublin also forms the basis of the latest scenery from Polishflight sim developer Drzewiecki Design, having recently releasedKrakow and Warsaw airfields for Microsoft Flight Simulator since itsrelease just over a year ago. In this review, we take a close look at Lublin Airport and see howit fares when compared to real life. InstallationAfter purchasing the package on the FlightSim.Com Store, you areprovided with a zip file with the installer for the scenery. You aregiven the choice at the end of the installation to look at the manual, and also whether or not you want to disable the static aircraft models- I chose to leave this enabled. The rest of the installation processis then automated. The airport comes with a three-page PDF document which includessome information about the history of the airport, as well as a map ofPoland featuring all major airports which Drzewiecki Design aim topublish in the future. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-10.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-04.jpgStructures And FacilitiesLublin is not a very big airport. It features four gates, twoSchengen and two non-Schengen, a small terminal building with basicshops and facilities that passengers can use before they board. One of the features that Drzewiecki Design includes with theirsceneries is the fully-modelled 3D terminal interior of the airportthey are recreating. This is a true-to-life representation with shops, facilities and gates all in their correct locations. This is thentopped off with passengers and airport workers, all posed to fit inwith the simulator environment. The center of the terminal is then met by the railway line thatconnects the airport with the center of Lublin in only 15 minutes. Atrain has been modelled and animated to run up and down the line atregular intervals, connecting your virtual passengers to the rest ofPoland. Outside the passenger terminal, there is a side road that hosts theairport fire services and fuel depot, plus a storage area and baggagecart facility built into a cutting underneath the terminalbuilding. Drzewiecki Design has adjusted the ground mesh to includethis cutting which is fenced off at both sides by the passenger carpark and apron road. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-11.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-12.jpgA patrol car with flashing yellow lights is also running a circuitof the airport, driving up and down the apron roads in front of theterminal, which adds a little extra ounce of life to the scenery. Anice touch is that the car will then sometimes stop and turn around infront of the static Wizz Air A320 that sits on stand 3 with passengersboarding the stairs onto the aircraft. Heading over to PZL-Swidnik, you find a far more industrial part ofthe airport with warehouses and hangars lining the airport perimeterwith six helicopter stands out front. The main facility was taken overby AgustaWestland in 2010, which in turn merged with Leonardo in 2016. Having previously flown here in 2017 with Ryanair on a trip fromLondon Stansted, I used the simulator's drone cam to retrace my stepsthroughout the airport, and have been able to spot things I rememberseeing. Overall, this is a very lifelike recreation of Lublin and veryaccurately portrays the layout of the real airport. Taxiways And RunwayThe airport at Lublin is split into two distinct halves. Thecommercial airport with 8,267 foot long asphalt runway and terminal, andthe smaller former helicopter factory with a shorter 3,937 foot longgrass runway. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-07.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-08.jpgThe main parking stands host spaces for five B737-class sizeaircraft, or two can be combined to form the space for a singleB767-class size aircraft. There is also one remote stand 10 that facesaway from the terminal and can be used by an aircraft based at Lublinfor a longer period. There is then a single taxiway that leads from the stands to themiddle of the runway, requiring commercial traffic to backtaxi onarrival and departure. The runway at Lublin is also far from flat, sitting on the top of a hill that peaks on the taxiway intercept. Thiscan be seen especially during the evening when on short final. PZL-Swidnik has a small paved taxiway area that leads to the sixhelipads, five small and one large, plus a concrete utility pad thatneighbors each. The main runway and the taxiways that lead to it areall grass with markers that guide aircraft around the facility. I alsogive credit to the fantastic use of animation of the gate thatseparates the grass runway from the parking stands which opens as theaircraft taxis towards it, as well as the gate that separates theSwidnik and Lublin airports. The two airports are then linked by a single taxiway that leadsfrom the main hangar at Swidnik to the backtrack turnaround loop atthe end of runway 07. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-02.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-03.jpgNight EffectsNight lighting in and around the main terminal is bright and bringsthe airport to life. The terminal and apron floodlighting makes use ofwhite LED sources while the car park and roads that lead to and fromthe airport are yellower, more halogen in style. Taxiway and runway lights are clear and vibrant, giving the pilotplenty of clarity when taxiing around an airport or making a finalapproach and landing. PZL-Swidnik remains relatively unlit with lights surrounding therunway and a few street spot lamps along the taxiway nearhangars. This facility is not designed with night operation in mindand therefore leaving this part of the airport dark increases therealism that Drzewiecki Design have included with their airport. Overall, flying into Lublin at night feels good and continues togive the same lifelike feel that the rest of this scenery has duringthe day. Seasonal TexturesDrzewiecki Design has made use of seasonal textures in Lublin, perhaps a little too much in my opinion. When the winter rolls in andsnow takes over southern Poland, the airport is transformed with acomplete blanket of snow. Parked cars, bollards, signs and buildingsare covered in a light dusting which slowly builds with MicrosoftFlight Simulator's fantastic render-based snow shader. The groundhowever, is completely covered with a thick, shiny layer of ice bothair and landside. And whilst the taxiway markings are still visible, there is very little to determine where the taxiway and grass is. Therunway however appears more or less untouched by snow, bar the wetground effect that the simulator applies to concrete. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-05.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-06.jpgHeading on over to PZL-Swidnik, the snow and winter definition hereis better with snow dusting the asphalt taxiway network and coveringthe grass as you would expect on an unpaved surface. Knowing how defined seasons are in the south of Poland, I wouldcertainly appreciate seeing some more work in balancing out the snowacross the entire scenery when the winter months kick in. Opinion And Closing RemarksOverall I really like this recreation of Lublin in Microsoft FlightSimulator. As an airport I have flown into, I can certainly vouch forthe realistic recreation that Drzewiecki Design has made with thisscenery with facilities and miscellaneous detailing included. While Lublin may not be the most popular airport in the world andcertainly under-utilised in real life, you can certainly enjoy a rangeof memorable routes in and out of here, such as those to Scandinaviaor Turkey. Drzewiecki Design has been for a long time one of my favoritescenery developers, and Lublin once again shows us why this is thecase. The level of detail, both airside and when looking into theterminal whilst parked at the gate, is second to none and reallypushes Microsoft Flight Simulator to the next level. This is afantastic scenery I really enjoy using and I'm sure you will too. /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-13.jpg /images/reviews/lublin/t/drzewiecki-lublin-14.jpgThe Technical BitReview PC Spec: Microsoft Flight SimulatorWindows 10 Professional6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 6700 Processor32 GB RAMNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660/images/reviews/lublin/title3.jpgMichael Hayward Purchase Drzewiecki Design - EPLB Lublin for MSFS See other Drzewiecki Design scenery for MSFS 2020

In 2000, the Polish Ministry ofNational Defence declared the airfield closed. The airport's runwaywas in poor condition and lacked proper lighting and modern radionavigation aids. In September 2009, it was announced that tenders were beingaccepted and funding had been secured from the EU for an opening in2011, in time for the Euro 2012 Football Tournament. Constructionworks finally began in October 2010 and were expected to be completedbefore Euro 2012; however the deadline was not met and instead theairport began to operate in July 2012. /images/notams/notams21/drze1018/modlin2.jpgOn 22 December 2012, it was announced that the runway at theairport would be closed to larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 andAirbus A320 indefinitely for safety reasons. Ryanair confirmed on theday of the runway closure it would divert all aircraft toWarsaw-Chopin Airport until the runway was repaired. Wizz Air alsoconfirmed that it would route its flights to Chopin Airport untilModlin re-opened. The official re-opening took place over six monthslater on 4 July 2013 after construction works to fix the runway hadbeen completed. On 17 July 2013, Wizz Air announced it would notreturn to Modlin despite its re-opening, but stay at Warsaw-ChopinAirport instead. Ryanair returned to Modlin on 30 September 2013 andsince added more routes to its initial schedule. /images/notams/notams21/drze1018/modlin3.jpgOn 19 September 2013, the Category I Instrument Landing System wasofficially ready for use. It began as ahamlet on Wawel Hill and was already being reported as a busy tradingcentre of Slavonic Europe in 965. With the establishment of newuniversities and cultural venues at the emergence of the Second PolishRepublic in 1918 and throughout the 20th century, Krakow reaffirmedits role as a major national academic and artistic centre. The cityhas a population of approximately 760,000, with approximately 8million additional people living within a 100 km (62 mi) radius of itsmain square. /images/notams/notams20/drze0218/krakow-2.jpgKrakow John Paul II International Airport (IATA: KRK, ICAO: EPKK)is an international airport located near Krakow, in the village ofBalice, 11 km (6.8 mi) west of the city centre, in southern Poland. Itis the second busiest airport of the country in terms of the volume ofpassengers served annually. The airport opened for civil aviation in 1964. The Balice airportwas a military site until 28 February 1968. Four years later the firstpassenger terminal was built there. /images/notams/notams20/drze0218/krakow-1.jpgKrakow Airport is the second busiest airport in the country afterWarsaw Chopin Airport. The airport has good growth prospects, asalmost 8 million people live within 100 km (62 mi) of it. The airportalso has a favorable location on the network of existing and plannedmotorways in this region of Poland, but it faces stiff competitionfrom the nearby Katowice International Airport in Pyrzowice, as wellas other Polish airports. Krakow Airport is equipped with the ILS, NDB, and DVOR navigationsystems. In the direction 25, an ALPA-ATA cat. II approach lightingsystem with flashing lights installed. In the direction 07, there is asimplified IDMAN approach lighting system. The airport apron equals90,000 m2 and currently provides space for 19 C-code aircrafts. Inaccordance with the ICAO standards, the Aircraft Rescue and FireFighting services provide Category Eight in terms of airport rescueand firefighting protection. /images/notams/notams20/drze0218/krakow-3.jpgKrakow Airport as a facility is used by both military and civilaviation. 13. Polish Airports Vol. 1 XPPublisher: Drzewiecki DesignReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $28.00/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-01.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-02.jpgQuoting Marty Arant from Flight SimShow 2017, Drzewiecki Design were one of the scenery developers tomake X-Plane add-ons 'before it was cool'. Recently they have beenporting over a number of their fan-favorite FSX and P3D sceneriesto the X-Plane platform including all four of their PolishAirports add-ons. In this review, we take a close look at Polish Airports Vol 1 andsee what the latest from Drzewiecki Design includes. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-03.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-04.jpgWhat/Where Is It?Drzewiecki Design Polish Airports v1 includes four (well, five)airports to fly from in great detail. These are EPGD Gdansk LechWalesa Airport, EPKT Katowice-Pyrzowice International Airport, EPLBLublin Airport and EPRZ Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport which also includesthe EPRJ Rzeszow Aeroclub. Each airport includes a small amount ofscenery in the immediate area modded, while Rzeszow sees the wholecity modelled. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-42.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-06.jpgInstallationInstalling the scenery was simple. Download the installer from yourpurchase site, select your X-Plane folder and start. As with allDrzewiecki Design sceneries, you are not required to input anyactivation keys and the installer asks if you would like it toautomatically add the files to your scenery.ini which I feel is alwaysa nice touch, especially with the less advanced simmers who may notknow how to access or edit configuration files. Also included is a set of PDF documents. The first explains thehistory of the airports and a little bit of background behind thedevelopers themselves, then the other four are airport charts andimportant information. These I have found especially useful whenflying in and out of these airports as they would be active when thescenery was made, making navaids and approaches accurate to thescenery. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-07.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-25.jpgStructures And FacilitiesEach airport has been updated to show their modern facilities andterminals. After joining the EU in 2004, Poland received funding toupgrade their airports to improve connections to the rest of the world(something that was lacking after the fall of the Soviet Union). Withstrong connections to the US, airports needed to be large tofacilitate bigger aircraft than ever before. Rzeszow opened a newterminal in May 2012 and in December 2012, a new airport in Swidnikreplacing the former PZL Factory opened to serve Lublin and othernearby towns, both of which are included with this pack. Terminals, hangars and buildings are all highly detailed and lookfantastic. 4k resolution textures are used to bring a lot of detailinto the simulator, with bump mapping used on objects that come closeor contact the aircraft (jetbridges, ground services, etc.). Thesesmall details certainly don't got amiss and add to the eye candywithin these airports. They are also frame rate friendly meaningnothing is lost from the overall enjoyability of the simulator. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-32.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-36.jpgEither Gdansk or Lublin have to be my favorite of the terminals(Lublin with its sleek modern building or Gdansk with its extensionsthat bridge out of the main building) while the plane spotters on thebalcony at Rzeszow is a nice ode to the developers, themselves planespotters who frequent the airport. Polish Airports also makes use of the AutoGate plugin byMarginal. AutoGate works similar to SODE in FSX and P3D where itplaces and animates airport ground services such as jet bridges andnearby vehicles. This works well in making the airport dynamic andadds an extra bit of life when on the ground before departure andafter landing. Small details really add to your simulator experience, and this issomething that these guys have done perfectly. Taxiways And RunwayTaxiways and runways at each airport are up to date and lookgreat. Textures are done in full 4k resolution and in P3D make fulluse of tarmac Physical Based Rendering (PBR). /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-17.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-16.jpgA great level of care has been put into the airport ground detailtoo. Katowice for example, you can still see the remains of a formerrunway that runs parallel to the current active one, while at Lublinyou can see where the former PZL Factory with its helipads is and thesurrounding warehouses around that. Most Polish airports are formermilitary base converts and still take from their former Sovietorigins, hence the recent funding to upgrade and modernisefacilities. Runways too are up to date and accurate. Two years ago Rzeszowextended their runway eastward, using the former threshold connectingthe flight school to the main runway as the base of theextension. Accurate to real life, you can see what's left of thearrows that separated this section of runway from the rest and theslightly thinner width too, adding to the level of detail this add-onprovides. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-43.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-44.jpgNight EffectsBeing on the X-Plane platform, this is where the add-on shines. Theairport environment lights up at night with the terminal and otherlamps shining down onto the airfield. This is greatly improved on withnew PBR definitions which determine the material of different panelsand how light reflects off of it. The taxiway and runway lights also glow in an array of colors, accurate and complete. This makes navigating a dark Polish fieldrather simple and Drzewiecki Design have certainly pushed X-Plane tothe limit, which has certainly worked. As the airport surrounding has also been improved with VFR sceneryand new overlays, these also light up at night and from high altitudegives you a rather fantastic light show. From the ground too, theselights group up towards the city to produce a rather fantasticlightshow. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-11.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-12.jpgTerminal buildings also have a separate set of nighttextures. These light up the scenery at night and show off more of theterminal interior. This works well in showcasing the new modern glassterminals that are being built in Poland, and by using images from theterminals directly at night, it adds extra life to thesimulator. These look really good and is something Drzewiecki Designhave done a number of times in the past, looking better with eachscenery package they release! Other Structures And The Surrounding AreaEach of the airports included with Polish Airports Vol 1 comes withVFR photoreal scenery and in the case of Rzeszow, includes the citytoo. While the VFR imagery may be a little low resolution up close, when in the air these look absolutely fine. Buildings are also placedin their real-world locations and do look rather good, really addingto the Polish theme of this add-on. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-15.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-08.jpgLooking closer at the city of Rzeszow, I do recognise a number ofthe buildings that are there, namely the train station in the city center andthe power plant visible from the airport terminal. This is allhighly accurate and looks really good on the eye. It also fits theX-Plane world well and really upgrades your flight when in and out ofthe southern Polish airport. Unfortunately however (and this is more of an issue with how speedydevelopment is in Poland at the moment!) there are a number of roadsthat plough through fields and other places that looking at the VFRscenery, it doesn't quite match. With a recent influx of EU funding,Poland has been constructing a number of new motorways and roadscross-country to improve connections. Inaccurate data in some ruralareas do also cause roads to sway away from their supposed paths. AsX-Plane takes road data from an always-updating OpenStreetMap andoverlayed scenery is used, this has caused a number of roads to bedropped on top of everything else. I feel that older satellite imageryhas been used and updating it would fix this, but that mainly comesdown to how readily available this new data is. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-19.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-20.jpgWe do however miss out on ground meshwork, something that was donein the FSX and P3D release of Polish Airports. Lublin Airport isperched almost on a small hill with ground services parked underneaththe terminal under a tunnel. Runways too are flat and do not useterrain contours which in the case of airports like Lublin, doesaffect it. Lublin's runway is also on a hill with the approach into 07being a rather steep uphill climb before suddenly dropping onto ashallow slope downhill. While on the ESP-Platform the mesh had beenmoulded to showcase this (albeit the flat runways of course), we donot get it in X-Plane which I do find a shame. Knowing that DrzewieckiDesign scenery packages do see regular updates, it's something Icertainly hope to see added in the future. Seasonal TexturesUnfortunately, seasonal textures is something that this add-onlacks. X-Plane does not have native seasons support, and as a result, seasons were omitted entirely by the developers. I do find this ashame as Poland has some really strongly defined seasons (heavy snowin winter, hot sun in summer) so by missing out on this I feel thatyou are missing a good part of the feel of Poland. I do hope that thisis something that will be revisited by the developers in a futureupdate. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-21.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-22.jpgOpinion And Closing RemarksOnce again, Drzewiecki Design have done a fantastic job on theirscenery package. One or two sharp edges here and there, but nothingthat will take away from your experience. I was really impressed withtheir FSX and P3D version of Polish Airports Vol 1, and this issomething that carries over to their X-Plane edition. As someone who has flown into a number of these airports in thereal world, just about everything is recognisable from the terminalbuildings to the surrounding scenery and approaches. I certainly was a fan of this scenery in FSX when I reviewed it alittle while ago, and while I do feel that a little more work isrequired with this one (road layouts/VFR imagery and seasons), it hasall of the beginnings of a great scenery pack, up there with some ofthe best on this platform. I have always been a fan of the work by Drezewski Design and PolishAirports Vol 1 for XP certainly doesn't fall below theirstandards. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-23.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-24.jpgThe Technical BitMinimum RequirementsX-Plane 10/113 GHz or any Dual Core4.0 GB RAM512 MB graphics cardWindows 10 / 8 /7 / Vista / XP (32 or 64 bit), Mac or Linux850 MB hard drive spaceReview PC SpecMicrosoft Flight Simulator X: Steam EditionWindows 10 Professional6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 6700K Processor16 GB RAMNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745 /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-34.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-26.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/DRZ-470-polish-airports-v1-xp-v2.jpgMichael Hayward Purchase Drzewiecki Design - Polish Airports Vol. 1 XP v2 Additional Screen Shots Additional Screen ShotsThe reviewer supplied us with lots of pictures of the scenery; hereare the rest. /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-27.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-28.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-29.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-30.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-31.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-09.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-33.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-18.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-35.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-10.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-37.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-38.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-39.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-40.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-41.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-05.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-13.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-14.jpg /images/reviews/polapt1x/t/Polish-Airports-vol1xp-45.jpg
