Brand new IndiGo repaint for Boeing 777-300ER (registered as TC-LKD) with base model. Model credits: PROJECT OPENSKY
  2. Hello! hello! It certainly feels as though it has been forever since I browsed this very site. Back then, I was still grinding away in high-school, and now I am about to wrap up my academia phase of life. Anyways! Without waxing too much nostalgia, I wanted to ask if anyone happens to have the Aviation Link SkySpirit 777 addon for FS9? I used to have a copy of it many years back, but I cleared out many of my flightsim addons during my hiatus, and ended up deleting it in the process. The site FS2000.org used to have it on hand, but has now seemingly stopped providing a download link to file. If anyone happens to know where I could find it, or perhaps even add it to the flightsim.com file library, I would be much appreciative as this addon was special in that I recall it also coming with its own special sound files for the birds RR Trent engines.
  3. /images/notams/notams21/capt1011.jpgOur 773 for MSFS 2020 is available in the MS Marketplace for Xboxusers. The 777F is coming soon. But the problem is, Xbox people technically cannot add any freeliveries from the Internet. So our plan is to include a set of 10popular liveries of the 773 and the 777F into their MS Marketplace.Same as we did for the 772. If any of the painters of the 773/777F liveries listed athttps://www.captainsim.org/liveries/m777.phpwish their liveries to appear in the Xbox world, please drop us a lineviahttps://www.captainsim.com/cgi-bin/contact.pl Source

Review: PMDG 777 Major Upgrade And 200 ER ExpansionBy Alex Dickinson /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-02.jpgThe classic PMDG 777 has (since itsrelease back in 2013), proven to be a fan favourite with the flightsimming community, and rightly so. However, myself and many othereager fans felt as if the product was starting to age, and as suchwondered if it could benefit from some of the newer features found onPMDG's latest products. Well, it seems like our prayers were answered,as this major update and expansion pack brings together a whole hostof improvements and new features to this airframe which shouldultimately improve the users experience. It is important to add, that the update and expansion were releasedat the same time and are only available for P3DV4 and V5 users. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-01.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-03.jpgThe -200ER ExpansionThe much anticipated 777-200ER expansion has brought theextended-range variant of the 777-200 into P3D. First entering servicein 1997 with British Airways, the aircraft offers an additional 1825nm range as compared to the standard -200 variants. PMDG has alsomodelled the aircraft with three different engines, and these are theTrent 800, PW 4070, and General Electric GE 90. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-04.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-05.jpgEach of the engines has been modelled accurately and each has itsown respectable sound set included. All three-engines sound terrificand include accurate 3D audio and precise variations both internallyand externally. PMDG has also paid close attention to detail into howeach engine affects the aircraft, for example when using the Trentengines, PMDG have realistically added EPR gauges to the enginedisplays, a standard feature found with Rolls-Royce engines. Another feature with the expansion pack is the inclusion of an EFB,which comes with both a takeoff and landing calculator tool. Thisfeature was highly welcomed as it meant that I no longer had toeyeball my derate and landing configuration figures. The result being,I was able to takeoff and land the plane more accurately. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-06.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-07.jpgUpdate FeaturesIt would be an understatement to say that PMDG has simply updatedtheir 777, as there are so many things which have been completelyoverhauled. For starters, one of the most anticipated features hasbeen the inclusion of PBR modelling to the exterior of theairframe. This has seriously improved the visual quality and gives themodel a far more authentic look overall. PBR has been added to thefuselage, wings, undercarriage, engine, and trailing edgecomponents. When it comes to the interior of the aircraft, you nowhave higher resolution displays for all the cockpit screens as well assome new equipment options, all of which look and work great. PMDGhave also upgraded the fly-by-wire mechanics and this is certainlynoticeable from a handling perspective, as the 777 feels a lot morelike a fly-by-wire aircraft than before. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-08.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-09.jpgUsers will also be excited to hear that the entire line of PMDG 777products are now compatible with P3D V5. As well as this, PMDG havealso included their ground animations feature. This is a nicealternative to GSX as it offers animations for ground vehicles such ascargo loaders, fuel trucks, water, and lavatory service vehicles. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-10.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-11.jpgIssuesOn the topic of GSX... this brings me onto the subject of issues. Ihave recently noticed that PMDG has stopped adding GSX profiles totheir aircraft and this is something I find quite annoying as I hatehaving to make them myself. Doing so is quite time consuming, andoften mine are far from perfect. Regrettably, the -200ER has thisissue and my frustration has been shared by many others within thecommunity. However, one silver lining is that I was able to copy thedata for the base 200LR model and port it over to the 200ER, with theresult that, whilst not perfect, it now works somewhat. Hopefully, over time I have no doubt that others in the community will releaseprofiles, but with the amount of money I paid, I would have expectedto see a profile included as standard. /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-12.jpg /images/reviews/pmdg777u/t/PMDG-777-13.jpgConclusionThe update alone is worthy of a lot of praise, as it has added somuch to the airframe. If that was not enough, PMDG have stated thatthey are also working on a cockpit overhaul, so this is something Icannot wait to see. Compared with the previous flying experience, theupdate has really given new life to the model and adds even greaterrealism and authenticity. The expansion brings even more immersion to the 777 by adding thelast remaining variants of the product line. With fantastic attentionto detail, great sound, and lots of features, it certainly does liveup to the high expectations and high quality we expect from PMDG. 6. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0223.jpgPMDG 777 product line updates released via Operations Center. As discussed in my 11MAR21 update, we have just pushed a series ofupdates that covers the entire PMDG 777 product line for Prepar3Dv4/v5. This update is really focused on quality-of-flight improvementsfor the 777, with updates to the pitch control module in the C*Uportion of fly-by-wire as some code improvements to eliminate anout-of-context acceleration that would occur at high AOA/ANU while theaircraft was rolling on the main landing gear. We have also gone through quite a few other smaller items asdetailed in the change list, and the usual other polish/tweaking thatwe do with update cycles. We are going to expand the concentration iris a bit over the nextfew weeks, to include dragging a few changes back over to the 747 and737 product lines in order to clean up problems that are "universal"across the product lines (the out-of-context acceleration for example)to those product lines- and we have some backlogged fixes that havepiled up while we focused on the 777 exclusively and we push those outfor you- as we now to the point where our workflow will balance outbetween our four active product lines more evenly. 9. /images/notams/notams21/para0227.jpgDeveloper Parallel 42 has announced the end of line fortheir 777 Immersion V1 product for Prepar3Dv4. Initially released in 2014, this product improves the PMDG 777with a variety of special effects. It will still be available butno further development will take place. In its place a new V2 is coming which will support the PMDG777 in Prepar3D v5, which includes a new -200ER variant. Source
  10. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0223.jpgOn Monday night, we are going to give one more build of our 777 tothe beta teams in order to check out some minor adjustments that wehave made, and make certain the product is ready for release. We aregoing to give them a few days with it before we push the product liveand as such I am updating our release guidance to 25FEB to 27FEB. The good news is that the product is done, and needs only a fewminor tweaks that are mostly cosmetic to the installation process anddocumentation. We are quite comfortable with the product itself, butwe have had a bit of non-PMDG schedule disruption (in the form of myflying schedule getting turned upside down by the crazy ice storms wehad all last week) and that has us pushing things out a few days sothat all of the right players (including me!) can be in the correctplaces to support the release. 11. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0210.jpgAs we wrap up one workday and start another, I am happy to reportthat we have reached a point where we are beginning to implement theprocess that moves both our free update and the new product (PMDG777-200ER) into release. We have some details that we are still cleaning up, but the hardwork and much of the difficult quality control tasking is completedand the items remaining are mostly polish, cleanup and closeout. Thesethings, like the major tasks, do take a bit of time so we arecurrently looking at between 7-14 days to release. To describe thatdifferently, we are looking at a release in the range of 17-24FEB. We anticipate releasing both the massive, free update for the PMDG777-200LR/F Base Package and the PMDG 777-300ER Expansion Packagesimultaneously with the new PMDG 777-200ER Expansion Package. Source
  12. /images/notams/notams21/pmdg0109.jpgI hope all of you had a nice holiday season and that your 2021 isshaping up to be an improvement over what we have all experienced with2020. I'm sure all of you are as tired as we are of being locked down, held in place, and unable to enjoy personal time with friends, familyand neighbors. We remain optimistic that this too will pass and soonenough we will all be able to enjoy one anothers company againsoon. In the mean time, development work at PMDG continues apace. Evenwith the holidays we were hard at work on numerous projects in aneffort to get some of the heavy-lift projects off of our agenda inorder to free up manpower for other items on the agenda. I am happy to let you know that tonight's update will be lesswords and more graphics, for a change - as the last few have been wallsof text to give you lots of information on multiple topics. Tonight Iam focused entirely on the 777 for Prepar3D. PMDG 777-200LR/F And PMDG 777-300ER Product Updates This update cycle has been in discussion for some time and isnearly finished. To recap a few aspects of it that are important, wewanted to bring you the long awaited 777-200ER product (details below)but found that in order to do so, it would be important to update thecore of the 777 product platform in order to bring it more intocompliance with newer products such as the 747 and 737 productlines. 777 is nearly 8 years old and the code was becoming harder tokeep up-to-snuff and it required a very significant overhaul that hastaken a large investment of development manpower to complete. Marketconditions created by covid, and the need to keep a significant amountof development resources dedicated to our upcoming line of MSFSproducts caused us to decide to conduct a massive, free update to theexisting 777 rather than to do a full product rebuild and replacementwith a new (and thus more expensive-to-users) v2.0. You probably know that we have a very advanced system ofcollecting, managing and monitoring service reports for all of ourproducts and we have continued to track issues for the 777 productline going all the way back to the day of publication. We have beenclearing up items in that system, adding features, cleaning upinefficiencies, modernizing aspects of it's operation and preparingthe code to survive another 5+ years cleanly within the Prepar3D v4/v5environments. We are planning a full virtual cockpit replacement andwork on that is underway but will take half the year toaccomplish. So this massive update is nearly finished- and we have just pushedanother version to our beta teams for evaluation. I expect a few morebuild cycles before we release the updates to you, because there arestill a few more items we want to clean up before turning the productover to you. PMDG 777-200ER Expansion Package In even more exciting news for the 777 product line, our longawaited version of the 777-200ER airplane is moving into beta testingthis weekend and we anticipate providing it to our beta team duringthe day on Saturday. The 777-200ER is easily one of the most asked-forexpansions and we have struggled to find the right time to insert itinto our development agenda. Given that our teams are siphoned off towork significantly on our MSFS projects, it seemed a natural fit todedicate time to this much loved airplane type at long last. The PW Powered ER: This package includes the 777-200ER with Rolls Royce, GeneralElectric and Pratt & Whitney engine types. Each engine type comes withit's own customized engine model, accurately modeled engineinstrumentation on the flight deck, accurate engine behaviors and ofcourse a custom suite for each. Along with the 200ER, we enable in the flight deck a fullyfunctional EFB that is available to you in all of the 777 models(777-200ER/LR/F and 777-300ER). For all of us on the PMDG team, working on the 200ER hasthoroughly reinvigorated our love of this, one of the most robust andmagnificent airliners fielded by Boeing- and it has truly been fun totake a deep dive back into this fleet type in order to bring it up todate with our 737 and 747 product lines in order to field this newvariant for you. The Roller Powered ER: Speaking of things to love about the 777: In this image of theRoller-Powered 777, the image was taken just as the left landing gearwas beginning to lose contact with the runway. I often wonder how manyof you take the time to really examine just how detailed ourground-relationship is with the 777 and 747 airplanes. We put a hugeamount of work into developing the physics models for the landing gearand their contact with the ground. If you look at the 777-300ER, youwill find that we fully modeled the cantilevered gear that helps togive the tail of the airplane an additional 18" of ground clearanceduring rotation. (The 747 has a bunch of it's own animation beautythat you only see on PMDG models- so go take a look! There is some funstuff going on down there!) The GE Powered 200ER: Looking forward, we are sort of feeling our way toward a releasefor this product line that appears to be around the end of January. Ifit needs more time in testing, then it will be in February, or howeverelse long it takes. Right now we are planning to push the product updates to you priorto the 200ER variant, but we might collapse those on top of oneanother and do them simultaneously if that seems like a smarter way tohandle the release once we see how things go. Either way- we arenearly finished and we can't wait to roll these out to you. Okay, that is all I have for you tonight. I hope you have a niceweekend and are looking as forward to this update cycle of the 777 aswe are looking forward to delivering it to you! Robert S. Randazzo PMDG Simulations Source

  14. Review: VMAX 777 Worldliner Professional Extended PackBy Rohan Nair /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_18.jpgAs one walks through the aviation hallof fame, one can't help but be marveled by how man-made technology is asignificant enabler in aviation. Reminiscing about the era of jets, marvel gives away to the somber thought that the once undisputed kingsof long-haul flights, the mighty four engine airliners now face thebeginning of their end. Their league now witnesses dwindling demandfor passenger service and hence, they by and large earn their keep andcount their days as freighters. Nonetheless, the show must go on. Anunforeseen turn of events involving a tense dance between economicsand technological revolution culminated in the birth of a new class oftwo engine airliners that would eventually become the monarchs ofnon-stop long-haul flights. With more than two decades of provensuccess, they have found their places in the aviation hall offame. Amongst them, up there, right at the top, is the undisputed kingof the long haul: the Boeing 777. The largest twinjet in existence, the 777 first flew in 1994 andwent on to become the most successful widebody airliner in terms oforders. It was Boeing's first fly by wire airliner and also the firstaircraft to be designed entirely using computers. The needs and wantsof the airline industry led the base model 777-200 to evolve into theextended range 777-200ER, the stretched -300, the stretched extendedrange -300ER, and the ultra-long range -200LR. Freight makes money, nodoubt. Which is probably why the 777 freighter was born at the end ofthe first decade of the 21st century. The -200, -200ER, and -300 canbe powered by different three powerplants: General Electric's GE90,Rolls Royce's Trent 800 or Pratt and Whitney's PW4000. The rest, namely the -200LR, -200F, and -300ER are powered by the GE90powerplant. Triple bogey main landing gear, a circular fuselage crosssection, a blade shaped tail cone, raked wingtips and a glass cockpitwith an advanced EFIS, fly-by-wire and automation are some of thedistinguishing characteristics of the 777 family. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_1.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_10.jpgThe 777 has been a significant part of the flight simulation storysince the days of the PSS 777 for FS2000. FS2002 and FS2004 featuredthe 777-300 as a default aircraft. Since the 777 didn't feature in FSXby default, Wilco brought out their 777 add-on to fill in thatvoid. Popular demand led PMDG to churn out their high fidelity 777simulation for the FSX and P3D universe. It goes without saying thatthe 777 is as popular in the virtual aviation world as it is in reallife. X-Plane too has its own 777 add-on and that is what this reviewis going to be about. VMAX 777, FlightFactor 777 or Ramzzess & Philipp 777 are some ofthe names the sole payware 777 add-on for X-Plane goes by. VMAXproduces the add-on developed by FlightFactor whose core team membersare two gentlemen named Roman, a.k.a. Ramzzess, and PhilippMunzel. The same team is behind the well-known FlightFactor 757, 767and A320 add-ons too. The 777 add-on was first released forX-Plane 10and initially featured the -200LR only. Later, an expansion pack wasreleased adding the -200ER, -300ER and -200F variants. Over the courseof time, the add-on has been improved and updated. The current versionof the product, v1.9.13 supports X-Plane 11 and currently VR is notsupported out of the box. One may elect to purchase the 777 WorldlinerProfessional which features the -200LR only. And then perhaps theexpansion to add the other variants. Or one may choose to geteverything in one package called the 777 Worldliner ProfessionalExtended Pack albeit the buyer will be set back $85 as opposed to $60in case of the base pack. In this review, we'll look at the extendedpack. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_11.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_12.jpgThe VMAX 777 supports both X-Plane 10 and 11. I've reviewed theadd-on with X-Plane 11.26 at the time of writing this and there are noversion specific compatibility issues. To run the add-on, you'll needany version of Windows from 7 and up and for you Macintosh folks, anything above 10.10 is fine. There's something for the Linuxcommunity too as the add-on supports Ubuntu version 14.04LTS. Whatever your choice of operating system may be, you'll stillneed 4 GB of RAM and 512 MB of VRAM at the least. I did the review ona 3.6 GHz 4th generation i7 with 16 GB of RAM and a 4 GB GTX 960Mrunning Windows 10 64 bit. Time to enter the virtual cockpit and seewhat's there. Other offerings from FlightFactor such as the 757, 767 and A320 areimpressive in terms of visual quality and fidelity. Now one would beinclined to believe the same is true for the 777 given that the add-onhas been around for well over five years and the presence of the 777is greatly yearned for in the simulation world. Yet as I look atVMAX's rendition of it, I found myself repeatedly thinking to myselfthat this model needs a bit of touch up on the inside. Contours anddimensions are top-notch but texturing isn't quite up to contemporarystandards. The definition of "high definition", in a strictlynon-technical context, has changed significantly as the capabilitiesof hardware and software have sky-rocketed. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_15.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_16.jpgThe quality of colors that adorn the virtual cockpit, inparticular, bothers me. A shade too different no doubt. The displaysdon't feel bright or vivid enough. The PFD, in particular, doesn'tsport the right tones of colors. That doesn't get in the way of thedisplays being quite readable due to large and clear text. Even so, apeculiar dearth of sharpness in the cockpit is something that I can'thelp but feel. Despite all that, the cockpit is quite realistic interms of general appearance, layout and operability ofcontrols. What's supposed to be there is there and nothing is brokenor missing. That includes a full virtual cabin too! At night, thecockpit looks quite good with the green text backlighting and thesubtle flood lighting. Although a pedantic may be quick to observethat some of the lighting controls don't do exactly what they'resupposed to do, functionality isn't impacted as you'll get thelighting you need. There are reflections of the cockpit night lightingon the windows but I really dislike the effect. It is quitedistracting. What's nice about the windows is the precipitation andwindshield wiper effect. There isn't much for lovers of 2D panels as a FMC popup is all thatyou'll get. And I should mention that the two FMCs for the pilots aremirrored. So, it isn't possible to have the PROG page on one and theLEGS page on the other like the real world. However, an interestingfeature is the EFB screen beside the pilot which is functional enoughto display the aeronautical charts that you want it to. That is, ifyou are willing to spend some time using a tool provided with theadd-on to juggle with PDFs and JPEGs. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_17.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_19.jpgOn the outside, the VMAX 777 fares a little better. The externalmodelling of all variants is excellent. Shapes, contours anddimensions are great. The most essential animations you would expectare there and work as expected. Except, however, for wing-flex. It'sthere, to say the least. The effect isn't as pronounced as it shouldbe though. Especially on the -300ER. What little effect is there playsout a un-naturally fast too. The peculiar behavior of the 777's highspeed and low speed ailerons have been simulated accurately. There area few goodies for ground handling out of the box such as air stairs,GPUs, chocks, a passenger bus and a refueling truck. Should you wishto load some virtual passengers, some of the doors on the aircraft canbe opened. Cargo doors, except on the 777F, aren't operable on thepassenger variants as aren't the boarding doors for first classpassengers. Overall, the 777 looks decent enough when flyingaround. There are few liveries that come with the add-on bydefault. Additional livery packs can be purchased or of course, youcan get some freeware ones from online file libraries. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_8.jpgFlightFactor's 777 features simulation of the 777 EFIS, FMS andother core aircraft systems. The buzzwords here are FMC, LNAV, VNAV,MFD, EICAS, and autopilot. All of these simulated components are ableto perform their core functionalities. The add-on features a realisticautopilot with LNAV and VNAV driven by the advanced FMS that has afunctional FMC. The FMC database is the same as the X-Plane customnavigation database sometimes referred to as the GNS430 navigationdatabase. The EFIS allows for a realistic looking MFD and the owner ofthis product shall also enjoy two realistic EICAS displays with thelower of the two displays featuring various pages and the electronicchecklist, a characteristic feature of the 777. The EICAS displayslook realistically different in the case of the PW or RR powered-200ER. Unlike in real life, the checklist is not truly interactiveand is for reference purposes only. And wow, there's a weather radartoo that has a catch to it. The weather radar can only be turned on oroff. It's not possible to manually adjust tilt and gain. What iscompletely missing is the fly-by-wire system of the real 777. Mostsystems are simulated and if you don't do things right, the 777 won'tfly right. Pleased by the number of features simulated? Quantitatively, yes,the Ramzzess and Philipp 777 has the functionality that a novice ormoderately experienced flight simmer would expect. Veterans andprofessionals, however, will not entirely be pleased for they seekquality and fidelity. As stated earlier, the add-on doesn't have dual FMCs which meansyou can't monitor two different pages at one point of time. The FMCdoesn't advise you when you're near the TOD point and neither does ittell you that drag is required to maintain speed during descent. TheFMC also only supports the metric weight unit. VNAV will level out theaircraft completely in order to gain speed during climb or lose speedduring descent. Occasionally, VNAV fails to initiate a descent at thecalculated Top-of-Descent point and initiates it much later. The FMCdoesn't properly account for speed changes that are required throughthe course of the descent and set deceleration points accordingly. Atcertain times, entering an assumed temperature higher than the actualOAT increases the takeoff N1 value calculated by the FMC. The systembehaves correctly when the difference between the actual OAT andassumed temperature is quite large. The FMC will only allow the ICAOstep size of 4000 feet. Strange considering the 777 in real life isflown so frequently with the 2000 feet increment. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_2.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_3.jpgA very disabling systems issue this add-on has is that the radiosonly support tuning of frequencies spaced by 25 KHz. What on earth isthat, you ask? Well, if you want to tune into 127.350 MHz to listen tothe ATIS then that's totally fine. How about 127.665 MHz? No, it isgoing to happen since this add-on doesn't support tuning offrequencies spaced by 8.33 kHz. Earlier, X-Plane itself didn't supportthis kind of frequency tuning but as version 11 was improved overtime, support for it was introduced. This add-on hasn't caught up yet. Despite of all this, the FMS and FMC are reasonably functionalenough and get the job done with some proactive intervention on yourpart. Most of the pages of the FMC are simulated fairlyaccurately. Company routes can be saved and loaded as needed. It'seven possible to view the FMC through a web browser on another deviceif both the host and client systems are connected to the samenetwork. If you get nervous about true zero visibility IFR flight thendo not fear too much as this add-on has an autopilot system withexcellent autoland capabilities. Apart from guiding the airplanethrough the whole final approach and flare, rollout mode ensures thatthe runway centerline is tracked after touchdown with a decent enoughlevel of accuracy. The 777 is a large and heavy aircraft that often flies fullyloaded. To ensure that the 777 can haul the mail, Boeing ensured thatthe aircraft has two powerful engines no matter who has manufacturedthem. In FlightFactor's rendition, except for the -200ER, all othervariants are powered by two powerful GE90 engines. The -200ER sportsthe option of being powered by the Rolls Royce Trent 800 or the Pratt& Whitney PW4096. In real life, the -200ER can also be powered by GEengines but FlightFactor have decided to leave it out of theirsimulation. There's an in-game menu for this add-on that apart fromswitching engines, will also allow you to load fuel and passengers, manage aircraft doors, ground handling goodies and a few otheroptions. While it works well most of the time, the menu may notproperly annunciate capacity limits. Interestingly, the pushbackaction availed of from this menu calls for you to drive the tugyourself. Not bad, I'd say. What is weird, apart from not being ableto open the cargo doors on the passenger variants, is that it isabsolutely a must to open the R2 door and have the air-stairsavailable in order to load the aircraft. Contrarily, almost all thetime, passenger boarding in real life is done from the L1 and L2 doorsand most of the time using jetways. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_4.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_5.jpgAgile is the one adjective that will probably never be used todescribe a 777 unless it is a scaled down RC model. The VMAX 777behaves so and which means the developers have modeled the flightdynamics well. The aircraft have a slow and heavy feel to theircontrols particularly at high gross weights. Even then, they exhibitrealistic stability and graceful movement. Characteristic tendenciesof the 777 such as the development of a sharp pitch up moment when theflaps are extended from 5 to 15, the tendency to break the maneuveringspeed limit when performing a high thrust takeoff with a light loadand the rocket-speed rate of climb when nearly empty have beensimulated very well. However, as the aircraft gains altitude, the samekind of performance shouldn't be observed. This isn't the case withthis add-on which, even when heavily loaded, has no problem reachingthe upper flight levels with excessive ease. As it turns out, thisproblem has something to do with turbofan bypass ratios not being setcorrectly. Perhaps that's why fuel burn doesn't feel like it's on theright mark and this is made evident by fuel consumption tending to beon the lower side. What goes up must come down and the 777 is a handful to slow downin time for approach even in real life. The FMC not calculating andmanaging speed properly in this add-on often calls for some manualintervention from the pilot during descent to keep things undercontrol. As I did so, I started to feel that the tendency of thisaircraft to gain speed during descents may be a tad more than what isrealistic. And that's when I discovered a quirk in the way the speedbrake can be operated. If you have the speed brake control mapped to ajoystick axis, then you're good. If not, I'm afraid you won't be ableto finely adjust it with the mouse or your keyboard. Up, armed andfully extended are the only three positions that the lever can be putinto with the keyboard and it won't really work with the mouse. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_6.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_7.jpgOn the ground, the aircraft taxis at idle thrust a little tooquickly even when moderately loaded. Note that the add-on doesn'tfeature taxi cameras for the -300ER and I'll let this one pass as it'squite difficult to simulate. Another quirk I observed is that thethrottles don't respond at all to inputs in a narrow range of travelnear the idle position. This makes setting a precise amount of lowthrust for taxiing impossible. Certain engine parameters such as EGTand N2 always seem to be on the higher side all the time. Although the777 handles well, engine parameters for all variants are in real needof a good amount of tweaking. And let's not forget that thefly-by-wire system is not at all simulated. My first few flights, orattempts at flight, were often cut short with a sudden and unexpectedoccurrence of a fuel leak and/or engine surging. Turned out that theX-Plane 11 failures system causes this and should be completelydisabled. That's not the sole culprit. To have the most hassle-freeexperience with this add-on, one must also disable custom failuresfrom the add-on's in-game menu. One area where this add-on greatly disappoints is acoustics. Theaircrafts' engines sound quite un-realistic and the quality of engineand ambient sounds is subpar. This applies to both the interior andexterior. Sans quality and realism, all sounds that are expected arethere. GPWS warnings, cockpit alerts, button press sounds, APU noise, cockpit avionics ambience, passenger and cargo loading sounds are allthere. Fancy some passenger announcements? Trigger them through one ofthe pages on the electronic checklist on the lower EICAS display. With regards to performance impact, this add on is quite frame ratefriendly and at times, I was getting frame rates as good as or evenbetter than some of the default X-Plane 11 aircraft. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_13.jpg /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_9.jpgIf you aren't already familiar with the 777 or the Boeingoperational philosophy, the developers have done a good job ofproviding adequate and more importantly, relevant documentation forthe add-on. Right off the bat, I was able to tell that the documentsare very old Qatar Airways 777 manuals that have been adapted to thescope of the add-on's extent of simulation. There's an FCOM that hasbeen trimmed to about half the size of the real one to ensure brevityand relevance. Similarly, portions of the FCTM along with normalprocedures from the FCOM have been coalesced into the Pilot'sHandbook. Hardcore simmers will also like the inclusion of non-normalprocedures into the documentation suite. There are performance tablestoo but frankly, I didn't find them comprehensive enough to enablevery realistic flight planning to the degree of accuracy what toolssuch asPFPXor Simbrief would offer. They are definitely good enough, however, tomake a reasonable estimate of fuel required, V-speeds and cruisingaltitudes. From the in-sim menu, one can avail of a quick interactivetutorial that will walk you through taking the plane from a cold anddark to a ready to taxi state. The documentation that comes with thisadd-on is satisfactory on the whole and will certainly help even thenovice simmer get up to speed with this add-on. The Ramzzess and Philipp 777 has been around for about 6 years andover the course of time has been updated many times to ensurecompatibility with X-Plane and to fix many issues. This is the sole777 add-on for X-Plane at the time of writing this. FlightFactor, inrecent times, have produced some excellent products such as the 757,767 and A320. With those products, some of which even have full VRsupport, they're really setting the bar when it comes to quality andrealism in the X-Plane sphere of things. Their 777 is in dire need ofan update to bring it up to contemporary standards andexpectations. Especially since it is the sole 777 add-on forX-Plane. There are rumors doing the rounds that a major update is inorder. If this update does come about, I expect and hope that it willmake this add-on an excellent one. /images/reviews/vmax777x/t/vmax777_14.jpgWhat we have now is a decent simulation of the 777 for X-Plane11. The add-on is functionally rich and moderately realistic. Theproduct, in its current state, is calling out for an update to enhanceaesthetics, re-tune engine performance and bring systems fidelity upto the standards FlightFactor have set for themselves with their otherproducts. However, no issue with this add-on is going to significantlyimpact your effort to have uneventful virtual flights if you are acasual simmer and not overly concerned with operational realism anddetail. If you're looking for a 777 add-on for X-Plane 11 then this isthe only way to go right now and it's a decent and usable add-ondespite all the flaws it has. If the update, as some claim is on thehorizon, does come around then it will probably make this a greatadd-on. That's it for this review. 15. /images/notams/notams18/pmdg0609/pmdg-logo.jpgRobert Randazzo of PMDG recently posted a bunch of informationon their current and upcoming projects. Updates pushed for 737 and 777 base packages:We pushed updates via the PMDG Operations Center for the PMDG737NGX and PMDG 777-200LRF base packages. These updates were pushedfor FSX, FSX-SE, P3Dv3 and P3Dv4 versions. These updates areimportant in that we have been able to find a few rare instances inthe 737 and 777 that might cause the airplane to stop responding touser input, and we also eliminated a few CTD issues that appeared inboth products. /images/notams/notams18/pmdg0729/737-ngx.jpgGet these updates by launching the PMDG Operations Center, and clicking on the settings wheel. PMDG 747-8 Beta Testing Update:We are beginning to feel that the 747-8 is "through the bow wave"of beta testing, and is looking more and more like a product that wecan start polishing, rather than still doing major construction work.We have a few areas that we are still fitting into place properly, butoverall she is beginning to behave well. We did not gag the beta team, so they have been showing you quite abit of the airplane, and no doubt will continue to do so as we wendour way toward release. I am not in a position to begin talkingrelease timeline yet, as we still have some things to do. /images/notams/notams18/pmdg0729/747-400.jpgPMDG 747-400 Update Pending:While we are on the topic of 747s: We have a massive update comingto you for the 744. As part of the normal beta process for the 748,we continue to find/resolve issues from forum reports, beta testingand technical support. Normally we would push these changes to you ina more industrious rate, but some of the core changes that we had tomake in order for the 748 to be inserted into this product line willbreak a ton of functionality unless we do the entire update at onetime, so this update will come to you right before the 748releases. In Other NewsWe have a ton of activity going on with the new PMDG OperationsCenter, which is still being tested internally. We are hoping to getour beta team involved in finalizing its fitness for duty over thecoming weeks. PMDGGlobal Flight Operationsis also becoming very active with internal testing, and our beta teamshould be seeing this in the coming weeks as well. www.precisionmanuals.com

  17. 777 Simulator By Bill Smith Let me tell you about our family day out, on the 777 Simulator. (It was a great way to get my daughter out of the house while my wife finished worked at getting our tax affairs in order.) When I was first invited to see this project it was five months into construction. It comprised an instrument panel mounted on a platform with two car seats, a yoke control, throttles but no autopilot, no landing gear controls, no brakes and the outside view displayed on a 17 inch monitor which sat on a desk ten feet away. Even in this unfinished state I thought that it was pretty impressive; the way that three separate monitors were used to display the ADI, HSI and the engine instruments. I even managed to takeoff, fly a quick circuit and land without crashing. (But only just). Four months later, my friend Captain Dean invited me to take another drive out to his home to take a look at a more complete project. Now that the cockpit was fully enclosed, we entered via a door immediately behind the captain's seat. I sat in the first officer's seat, my daughter sat behind in a tiny jump seat and Captain D, the project's creator, took his place and began to run us through the basic layout. Ahead, through the windows, was a giant screen which displayed (via a back projection unit) a view of the domestic terminal buildings at Perth International airport. The light that reflected from this screen provided the only illumination in the cockpit, so it was pretty dark in there. Turning on the cabin lights, we could now see the completed overhead panel in all its intricate detail, and the autopilot switches at the top of the instrument panel, just under the glare shield. The amount of work that has gone into this is hard to imagine. Even my daughter was impressed! The aircraft was a Boeing 777, but the cockpit has been scaled down to the size of a 737, so that it can fit into a small bedroom. The simulator program which runs the whole thing is Microsoft's FS2002, but all of the controls which are usually operated by a mouse click or a keyboard have had their operations assigned to a "real life" switch/knob/pedal or whatever has been installed to approximate the real thing. I do not have the slightest idea of how this achieved, but Dean is very much at home with computers, so for him it was not such an overwhelmingly difficult task. You can get a good idea of what it looks like by going to Project Magenta and clicking on the "references" link. Captain Dean. handed me a checklist, and I began to call out the first stage of the start sequence. Beginning with the battery, starting the APU, etc. (Anyone with an Eric Ernst panel would be familiar with the process.) After getting VFR clearance for a north departure, we pushed back and began the second stage of the engine start process. Captain Dean pointed out the aircon switches in the overhead panel which are fully operational! The heat generated by all the cockpit electronics necessitates a cooling system in the warmer weather, but we didn't need it on that particular cold, wet Sunday. During the checklist, the Captain had to skip over any references to the FMC, because it is yet to be installed. As we began to taxi out to runway 03, it was pointed out to me that Nav 1 was set to the Perth frequency, while Nav 2 was set for Geraldton, our destination about 200 nm north of Perth. Which was interesting, because with a runway length of just 6500 feet, Geraldton is not equipped to take a 777. Switching to the tower frequency, we received takeoff clearance. Dean has disabled the audible pilot's responses on the ATC menu, so he responds to all instructions using his own voice. (Now to my mind, sitting at home, talking out loud to an imaginary controller is a bit too close to the loony end of the normality spectrum, but I won't dwell on it.) The noise of the engines spooling up for the takeoff was fantastic. He must have some special kind of speaker system set up! We lifted off, accelerated to 250 knots, turned NNW, and above 10,000 feet accelerated again on the climb out to the cruise altitude of 31,000 feet. Which is pretty high for such a short trip! In no time at all we had picked up the VOR for Geraldton, and upon reaching FL310, it was time to start the in-flight movie. No really! By now, my offspring had a good idea of what a jet cockpit looked like and she had had enough. So we all bundled out of the cockpit and headed to the living room to set her up with something to eat and "Harry Potter" on the VCR. Back the cockpit Captain D. began to slow down and descend for an approach into runway 03. It is interesting to note that in spite of the panoramic outside view, neither of us spent much time looking out of the windows until we were within visual range of the airport. It's the instruments which really provide all the information that we need so we constantly scanned these to monitor all aspects of our progress. This was much easier for the captain than for me, because I am used to scanning one small area of a 17 inch monitor to get all the information. In this set-up, the instrumentation is scattered all over the place, and I had yet to learn exactly where everything was. Captain D. has obviously become very much accustomed to this layout and executed a really smooth approach and landing. We turned off the runway, and shut it all down according to the checklist. After a quick coffee break, it was time for me to fly it back to Perth. I fumbled around with the overhead switches, trying to start the thing according to the first officer's reading of the checklist. I adjusted all the autopilot settings and asked if we could set both Nav 1 and Nav 2 to the Perth frequency. Well yes we could but...The first officer had to climb out of the cockpit, disconnect a few cables and fiddle around with the computer and re-connect us up to display the outside view. So you see, until the simulator is completed, you really need to set your VOR frequencies before you take off. With the first officer safely back on board, I used asymmetric power settings to steer the giant jet onto the runway to back-taxi to the threshold, swinging it around on the grass to line up for takeoff. We had plenty of flap set for a short field takeoff. I powered up the engines and released the brakes. I managed to get us off the ground before we ran out of tarmac and the first officer selected gear up. As I steered us around to head back to Perth, my eyes were darting all over the instrument panel to try and locate all the usual references to rate of climb, altitude, direction, engine power, etc. I completely missed the airspeed indicator however, and pretty soon our ears were assaulted by the sound of an overspeed warning. I reduced the power setting and concentrated on the process of turning on the autopilot. My first officer was beginning to exhibit signs of a loss of confidence in my ability. I tried to reassure him by telling him that I I hadn't crashed a plane in a long time. We leveled off at 21,000 feet and I used the time in the cruise to try and understand some of the extra features of the instrumentation. There was a traffic collision avoidance system, and a "trend" indicator; (a system of radiating rings to indicate the point when I would reach my next selected altitude.) Actually, changing direction, speed, altitude and pitch by dialing up numbers on the autopilot made the whole experience seem more like a computer game than flying a plane. I will gloss over my confusion surrounding the active runway at Perth. Suffice it to say that two major changes in direction during the descent further diminished my first officer's faith that he would survive any landing with me at the controls. While on the base leg, I momentarily mistook Jandakot airport for the International airport, but eventually I got us lined up for an approach into 03. At last I had everything pretty much set up correctly, just before I drifted left of the centreline, then right, then left again, just before touchdown. As soon I pulled on the reverse thrust levers, I reached under the seat for something very heavy with which to hit the first officer around the head. (Well I had to do something to stop him laughing). So in spite of humiliating myself in front of somebody who really knew what he was doing, I have to tell you that it was fun. About as much fun as it's possible to have indoors on a wet Sunday afternoon. This cockpit simulator has an incredibly realistic look and feel to it, except for one thing. The smell! I have never smelt a brand new jet, but I should imagine that it smells a bit like a new car. You know; a heady mix of hot paint and toxic fumes from new vinyl. This simulator smelled of new wood. (But after half an hour of me at the controls it smelled of nervous perspiration.) Nevertheless I look forward to the opportunity of flying it again when the FMC is operating when we can enjoy another family day out. Bill Smith Perth, Western Australia leesmith@ca.com.au
