I have flown a Diamond Star before, and I was singularly unimpressed. The power lever is byzantine in its logic (there are four detents...Idle, cruise, climb and full, no available settings in between), the cockpit is incredibly cramped - with a 36" inseam like me, legroom is at a minimum, not to mention for my passengers, who don't seem to enjoy me flying from the back seat ;-). But by far the worse thing of it is that its performance is not any better than a 172RG...worse if you figure in the climb rate (at CYBW, 500-600 ft/min on a very good day) and slightly lower cruise speed. Would I pay $250k ($CDN) for that airplane when I can scoop up a very nice used 172RG, 177 or even a 182 for much less? NO.

My friend flies a Katana (Yes, I know...a VERY different plane) out in Florida...he likes it, but agrees....it isn't a great plane. He'd prefer a nice 182 any day:)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-03 AT 02:07AM (EST)[p]Thats one great aircraft! From what I hear from my flight instructor and pilots friends, is that they handle great! Instead of cables making the ailerons maneuver, metal bars so there is no slack going on. So these aircraft are very precise and maneuverable! But to me or atleast I found the "DA-20" very unconfortable because of its sport car kind of seats. So basically I like 172s or in other words, the sedan or mini van.

How about it's bigger brother, DA42? It's equiped with two Thielert Centurion 1.7 jet A fuel powered diesel engines, a first in aviation history. The following is a quote from Diamond Aircraft website:

"The DA42 Twin Star will come standard with a 55-gallon fuel tank, cruise at 180 KTS, and burn only ten gallons per hour total. The range will be 870 nautical miles plus reserves. With optional 73-gallon tanks the range will be 1,230 nautical miles plus reserves. The useful load will be over 900 lbs after full fuel (900 plus lbs of passengers and baggage). The Twin Star will come standard with an integrated glass cockpit."

    Oh, heck yeh!! :D

I'd take a Diamond Star anyday. I'm sure they beat flying 152's.. I do agree about the new 'race' style seating that these type of airplanes are having though. I sat in a OMF Symphony and I could barely see over the dash.

However, with such an avionics suite like in the DA42- would I need to? ;-)

I'd go for a regular Cessna, Piper or Beech anytime over these 'new' designs, I hate them, they look ugly...
