What is stuck to this F-16..?

I'm sure some of you military fans out there can tell what is stuck to the side of this F-16? It's a terrible pic, but i'd like to know what that addition it pls.. Stephane maybe...?

Hi Steve,

My best guess is it is a storage pod of some sort. Most aircraft that go to airshows will use a fuel pod for stowing of heir personal gear.

That is the first time I have seen anyting like that, though.

Hi Steve,

That is known as a CFT or Conformal Fuel Tank. Something similar is employed by the Boeing F-15E Strike eagle which differs from the basic F-15B or D by the addition of what they call FAST packs, where FAST stands for Fuel And Sensory Tactical.

On the F-16 it's prime use is I suspect for additional fuel but there's no real reason why they won't also fit additional avionics in there.

Well, I can confirm it's an aerodynamic fuel tank.
It's used primarely by the Israeli Air Force's newest F-16's.

Ah, thanks guys.. I was wondering about fuel, but didnt see the point as that usually goes underneath etc. But thanks for enlightening me in on this one, it was bugging me..

They are indeed conformal fuel tanks. Check this link: http://www.f-16.net/reference/versions/f16_es.html

And the "pods" that everyone mentions for personal gear storage are more correctly termed "blivets". They are usually just re-manufactured external fuel tanks, or on the F-4 they were re-worked Napalm canisters. But call them what you like......they just carry golf clubs and dirty laundry....

Sorry to be a pedant mate but are you sure the Israeli's use these? They certainly have the F-16s with the extended dorsal spine, but the CFTs also?

As far as I was aware the United Arab Emirates were the only people to have ordered these.

Actually, you're all wrong! That picture happens to show one of the few parasitic organisms that preys on aircraft. This poor F-16 is slowly having the Jet-A drained from her viens by a large leech known as Suckinum Emptius.

Someone call Terminix. :-lol
