Thread: Hmmmm... Another anomaly...

  1. Default Hmmmm... Another anomaly...

Has anyone else had the problem where, when trying to slew to a gate in some add-on sceneries, once you release the slew, the plane just shoots off like a rocket, zipping along at 250kts.? This has happened to me at a couple airports. It's happened both times in add-on scenery, and with a loaded ATC flight plan. Of course, the starting position that MS choses is rarely the same as where you WANT to start out, so I've used slew to get to a spot, and wouldn't you know, as soon as I release the slew, BOOM! Off she goes!

I've stopped slewing with a loaded flight plan, but would still like to use certain locations in my scenery as starting points, etc.

Anyone know what this is? An undocumented feature, maybe?

I have played with this issue a bit.
In FS2002 there is a new feature that if you release the slew mode at altitude the plane will fly at "cruise" speed.
If you release the plane from slew and the sim thinks that the plane is on the ground it "Should" not cruise away. This problem shouldn't happen with default planes because they are generally set with the correct altitude in the cfg file but it will happen with add-on planes more because they don't necessarily have the correct altitude figures in the following sections:
These two following points define the angle & height that the plane is selected at,
static_pitch=-0.4 //degrees, pitch when at rest on the ground (+=Up, -=Dn)
static_cg_height=7.1 //feet, altitude of CG when at rest on the ground
    AND
in the wheel contact point heights.
As an example, importing the Concorde from FS2000 you would see this with the wheel height at rest. It has an obvious problem.

If this is a default plane, you have to remember that FS2002 has different elevations for different areas or your setup may cause variations in the height while in slew mode. The plane may drift up a bit. Make sure that you drop the plane to the deck (F1) before you release slew and it might stop the problem. Try this without a flight plan as a test.

Thanks for that. That makes sense. Each time was in an add-on plane at add-on scenery. So, then, there must be something to that.

Too bad I can't turn that off. Or can I? Hmmmm...

The problem is caused by an error being present in either the footprint (1004), the scrape points (1005) ... or the fuselage settings (301) in the CoG height above ground.

FS has always been finnicky to adjust gear points for - cosmetically speaking, that is - so the wheels neither float above or sink below the terrain surface. When you factor in bad scenery design by default, the time needed to get the perfect stance is considerable.

The values put in the airfile to set these points when in FS2000 may depart from the numbers inserted by the design software. In such a case, in the newer sim (FS2002), the SLEW command will then pick up on these errors and the end result is to launch the a/c like a rubber band powered balsa-wood glider.

Generally speaking it is the front or rear scrape point that causes this problem.

I would suggest that you begin by reducing the SCRAPE POINT distance FWD or AFT in the aircraft.cfg file. If a taildragger, use the AFT : if a tricycle gear, try the FWD (distance from CoG or Reference point). Ultimately you will stop the annoying phenomenon but it will take a bit of patience - or a bit of luck. It is all because of the different gear interaction with terrain in FS2002, and SLEW, both of which are implemented very differently in FS2002. Note that I didn't say better - just differently ;) It manifests with a/c imported from and designed for FS2000.

Try to hit the F1 key before deactivating the slew.
