..but here goes: If I for example want to model a panel background in gmax, or make some animation, can the files be exported as .avi (or any other common format) or .bmp (/gif/jpeg...)? Thanx.

The long answer, if Discreet made this capability in gmax, who would need their US$12000 3Dstudiomax...??

(maybe someone out there might make an plugin that can do this, but I bet that it wouldn't be supported...)

BTW I know of at least one free 3D program capable of doing this... I think it was 3D Canvas.

a panel background... take a screenshot of gmax or make a virtual cockpit and export it to flightsim the load her up and hit the print screen key then paste it into psp or whatever and just edit the scenery in the windows out (maybe to make it easier put black windows in).
