Thread: Serious speed!

    Default Serious speed!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-30-01 AT 08:44PM (EDT)[p]Intel's released it's 2.2GHz P-IV (Northwood) CPU in Japan this past Thursday. I'm imagining any FS performance issues will soon be put to rest.

I was hoping to extend the life of my current PC for at least another year. Might have to re-assess my needs. ;-)

PS; PLEASE, NO AMD vs. INTEL FLAMES! My intent is to bring to light the rapid advances in hardware capabilities, not start a rediculous (and rather childish) "my CPU is faster than yours" thread.

PPS; Crap - you'll need to copy and paste the URL - forgot about the comma thing.

Dave, the problem is one of percentages... :-)

lets say we have 18 fps in fs2002 with our 1.6 ghz P4 or whatever...

    we change to a 2.2 say a 25% increase..

our 18 fps is now 22.5... our 9 fps at a detailed area is now 11 ?

weigh up the expense... might not be worth it after all...Joe

to all intents and purposes, the increase s

My wife wouldn't give me any allowance for a new computer anyway. ;-) My desire is to extend the life of my current machine through the release of the next version of FS. Based on the timing, I imagine 4GHz Cpu's will be common.

Is this what I heard was going to be called the Itainium chip?

Serious speed almost certainly = Serious $$$.

Last time I checked, P4 2.0 Ghz was still around $400-$450 USD. I don't think I could convince the wife to let me take out a 2nd mortgage on the house to gain a few FPS. Although, I do have life insurance on her....hmmmmm...:)

No, the Itanium line represents the 64-bit Intel processors.

if you already have a pretty fast intel processor, then upgrading to that thing probably won't give you an increase in frame rates. you need to determine whether your performance bottleneck is at the cpu or the graphics card. for games, usually the bottleneck resides in the graphics card.

The new P4's really stress floating-point math (good for video editing, etc) but FS2002 doesn't rely on FPM that much.... and therefore may not yield a noticable increase in performance.

Sad to say the percentage thing is correct. However the difference between 1.6GHZ and 2.2GHZ (600MHZ) is as fast as many machine are that run fs2k2 at a reasonable frame rate already!

You know that if Intel has 2.2GHz is in production, they have overclocked (and thus freon cooled) demo and validation systems running close to 3-3.5 GHz. Boy are they fun to play games on (i've done it).

I suspect the float point is a minor part of the total op codes, but something makes the CPU quite warm running fs2k2. I suspect the floating point pipe is pretty darn full. good think the other three pipes can issue other opcodes at the same time.
