IFR Checkride

I'm having some trouble with the IFR checkride. I'm sure it's just me misunderstanding where I'm supposed to be or another typo in the briefing. I'm fine on the VOR approach all the way past the missed approach for 34R (I noticed they labeled it 16L/R in the briefing but I'm not one to complain). Then I climb out to 2050 (trying to split the difference between the 2100 on the chart and the 2000 she tells me) on 339 to the PARKK NDB at which point I perform a standard rate turn to the left and head directly for the KSEA VOR (116.8) which brings me to a heading of something 150. I also start climbing to 3000 like she said. When I pass the VOR I turn to 140 like she mentioned and right there I fail. I just get a message that says I have to do it again. So, there I am on the 140 radial at 3000 feet, which is just what she told me to do and what it says in the briefing but I fail. No explantion. It's happened to me 5 times now. Same place. Anybody spot what I'm doing wrong?

I tried that but nobody posted anything specific for the Instrument checkride except for the tolerances. I'm definitely within the posted tolerances if I'm following the right directions at the right altitude but I have the sneaking suspicion that I'm going in the wrong direction.

That instructor is just a Bitch eh !!!

I failed at the same point about 20 times & it drove me mad.
You'll kick yourself when you find out what you're doing wrong.
I asked the guys on the forum, the same as you. This is the answer :

Yep, it tells you exactly how to pass the IFR checkride. I's all
to do with your entry to the holding pattern. You need to turn sharp left and effectively double back on yourself and return the way you came. It's that easy, and she wont even expect you to go around a whole circuit. However the sharp turn is pretty tough.

If I remember correctly the examiner tells you to hold on the 140 radial. That means you need to be coming in towards the VOR on the 140 radial, i.e. heading towards the radial on a heading of 320. To do that you need to turn at the VOR and fly outbound parallel to the 140 radial for 1 minute then make a 280 degree turn towards the inside of the holding pattern and join the holding pattern inbound on the 140 radial. Take a look at figure 18.3 in Rod Machado's Ground School and it should come clear.

Once you've done that you will find that you don't have to fly the full holding pattern as the examiner will clear you to the NOLLA LOM for the ILS approach at Boeing Field. Make sure you tune your ADF to the NOLLA LOM.

Since you seem to have passed this checkride, maybe you can shed some light on this one: the examiner (I agree she's a Witch with a capital B!) tells you you'll get a "warning" and if you screw up a second time you'll fail. But she doesn't like my steep turns (I probably wasn't within tolerances, but that's not the point) and she fails me instantly. What happened to that "second chance?"

Steep turns will fail you. 45 degree turns are considered steep in the US and after that they are considered aerobatic.

I have a lot of fun doing my bi-annual in the US because when we do steep turns in the UK they mean 60 degree which is tough and needs a lot of backpressure on the column to hold the height. The young instructors at the Florida flight school blanche when you say "60 degree turn suit you" when they get onto the steep turn part of the review.

It is not an option as it is not allowed to be done, but its fun teasing. Having said that I do enjoy them especially when you catch your own wake as you complete the 360.

I have tried to simulate catching the wake in FS2002 but without luck. So if anyone has managed that I would be interested to know.

Steep turns in IFR are a strict no no and you should be aiming to do a full 360 in 2 minutes at the most.

when you work that out you can see how the racetrack holding pattern falls into place.

1 minute turn gets you going back on the reverse heading, 1 minute straight and level, 1 minute turn, 1 minute straight and level and so on. Four minutes for the pattern, 20 minute delay, 5 patterns to fly.

Wind conplicate things as far as the timings and shape are concerned , but hey, that what makes it all so much fun.

After the missed app. of the VOR 34L/R at PARKK turn LEFT and climb from 2100 tp 3000. While in the turn,dial 320(=reciprocal of 140) in your OBS. (Since she wants you to hold on the R-140, your INBOUND course will be 320.)It will be a parallel entry.
Continue the turn to HDG 160 and intercept initially R-320 inbound to the VOR.(Caution: you will get reversed needle sensing!What I did was to tune #2 Nav also to 116.8 and dial 140 in its OBS. This way you have normal sensing on the #2 NAV)
After crossing the VOR on a HDG of 140, continue straight for 1 minute , then turn LEFT to a HDG of 275 to intercept R-140 inbound.(using #1 NAV)
After passing the VOR, she'll tell you to fly to NOLLA for the ILS13R.
Hope this makes sense.

Your difficulty:

Always go to the 2100 until outer marker, then go to the 3000 she tells you and turn 140, then perform the parallel entry to the holding pattern

What comes next:

(fly 140 for one minute, then turn left 230 until you re-intercept the pattern. and retrace your tracks, she'll clear you to then fly 320 and intercept the 13R approach for boeing. When you reach outer marker, do the procedure turn and intercept ILS, it should center the glide slope around outer marker, she doesn't say you can decend, but once you've performed the procedure turn, you can.

Thanks guys. I passed it. It was the holding pattern that was screwing me up.
