LAST EDITED ON May-25-02 AT 03:25PM (EDT)[p]...After trying forever to get it right, I've finally nailed the infamously dangerous (and quite difficult) Dutch Harbor/Unalaska approach...and here I am doing it...!!!!

Having just flown by, I am preparing to turn...

This shows just how close we come to some of these mountains...

I just liked the way this shot looked...

    Heh - overturned a bit...I suck, remember...:-)

Gear coming - flaps 25...throttles around 70%...the -200 needs all the power it can get!

Rolling out...and just about aligned with the runway...

...When we land here we keep the engines in reverse until we stop...otherwise a very unpleasant fate awaits you!

Oh, yeah...we have PLENTY of runway left...:-lol

Now - your challenge. Try the PADU approach!

    The requirements are:

-You must be flying a 737-200 of your choice. No -300, -400, -500, or any NG's.

-You are allowed to use a HUD. ASA's 732's do have this...I haven't gotten around to installing it on mine yet...

-You can just take off and circle. Or you could take off from Anchorage and fly there...

-You can fly in any weather. ASA's pilots only do it in decent visiblity. This is because, guess what, it's visual! Your ILS is the VASI and the DUT NDB ( 283.0 KHz ).

-NO AP! It won't do you any good anyway...I may note!

    -Have fun...:-)

    Here's your approach plate:

What is says is, fly over the airport on a heading of 346 magnetic, at 3700' turn to 301, hold for a bit, then maintain 1700' and turn to 126, hold for a minute, and turn to 166, you should be aligned with the runway. From there descend and follow the VASI.

Looks like you had fun Erick - nice shots!

However, I'm not much of a 737 pilot so I think I'll give it a miss ... well I certainly would miss! :-lol

I nailed it pretty good too! I was a teeny bit rough with the plane, but not that rough, everything pretty smooth, had plenty of runway left for takeoff and landing.

    Takeoff from PADU

Going around to come back at the airport

Almost lined up, came in slightly to the right but got realigned quickly.

    Descending

Touchdown, just a teeny bit short, but most likely nothing wouldve happened anyway.

You have so much runway left because you touched down early...;-)

Lookin' good though - now do it at bare minimums weather like ASA's pilots do...:-)
