Thread: DX10 - Maybe just hype

  1. Default DX10 - Maybe just hype

If you look at the early benchmarks and reviewer remarks you have to wonder if DX10 will really deliver as promised? The key word is EARLY in these reviews.

There is still a lot of work to be done in drivers and code bases, but a bolt on solution that MS plans for FSX is less than promising.

FSX64 (my predicted name) will make good uses from the ground up of multicores and DX10 but until then, patch is just what it is.

Time for me to go out and get a cheap highspeed DX9 card for less than $200. ATI X1950XT for $199 at Newegg.

    I wouldn't judge a book by it's less than stellar Cliff's Notes version. :)

It would appear that the demo which was used to provide this review is what is actually substandard - not the rendering platform it was theoretically based on.

Take a look at this preview of Call of Juarez, as used in a review for some DX10 hardware:

(View the WMV's - jawdroppingly good!)

I would postulate that the "Lost Planet" game is simply a lost cause when it comes to porting it to the PC platform. If there is no visible difference between the DX9 build and the DX10, someone really fudged up - and I don't think it was Microsoft or ATI in this case.

I wouldn't base anything off of a console port. These are rarely decent examples of how a game should be written. If you want to see what DX10 can bring, check out the Crysis previews.

I'm guessing that what ACES has planned for FSX is more than just a "bolt on" solution as they aren't planning on releasing it until this fall. The changes they made to SP1 were more than just bolt patches too, so I'm betting they take advantage of DX10 as far as they possibly can.

That's just the problem. There is nothing to show yet except artist drawing of what it might look like. I think a lot of us will forgo DX10 unless it proves to be really good and fast. It's unfortunate that you have to dig deep for Vista and probably a bunch of system upgrades to try it out when it does make it to the market.

There are more than just artists drawings of Crysis, but yeah, we will have to wait to really see how it performs. Technically you can do almost everything under DX9 that will be possible under DX10. The difference is that it would take twice as many, or more, passes to render the same scene.
