Default Is it really that easy?

    Greetings all,

I have never updated any drivers...

Have just d/loaded the 30.82 exec file from the Nvidia site.

Nvidia FAQ says to just execute the file; is it really that
easy or are there pitfalls I need to know about?

    Win98se
    P3 733
    383MB Ram
    Nvidia GeForce DDR AGP 64MB
still has drivers from Dell summer 2000

    Any encouraging words are appreciated!

Could be, and could not. Nvidia should know the routine, though, and they most probably have included some kind of "Uninstaller" with their d/l. Normally, most video card manufactureres advise you to uninstall the current drivers, reboot with SVGA drivers, and then install the new ones, and reboot again.

As Darryl mention, yes and no.

W98 used to like a complete uninstall of all video drivers, and set your display driver to be standard VGA.

After the reboot, up pops the hardware display option asking you for drivers for your (what W98 thinks is) new video card. Then you can select the drivers from the directory of your choice.

But is there anything in the fine print of the read me about doing this ?

The good news is this is now a lot simpler under XP !

Thanks for the help, I'm just don't want to mess up a
system that works for everything else but CFS3...

This is what the nvidia FAQ said:

Nvidia is saying just to execute the file?

In the last paragraph they say "once you have prepared your
    system for the driver installation..."

They are just refering to closing other programs etc...?

If so, since I have Win98se, I can just run this 30.82 exec file?

Sorry to be so fussy about this :D

    Thanks for any help!

Almost everybody with win98 has learned to do it something like this:

Go to add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall the old Nvidia driver.

    Reboot with no driver installed.

On reboot, if windows finds it needs a driver automatically (i.e. it says new hardware found (vid card), then follow the wizzard to install the standard PCI VGA dirver and reboot. If windows install wizzard doesn't install the standard PCI VGA dirver, then go to control panel, device manager, display adaptor, driver, update, have disk, show all, standard, and chose the the standard PCI VGA driver and let windows install it.

Now reboot and windows should now be using the crappy PCI driver, then install the Nvidia driver by clicking the NVidia driver executable or unzipping the zip file, (note the path where it temporarily unzips to), wait for it all to happen, and then reboot again.

If it did not install after the reboot, then go to device manager and manually install it just like above, only you will have browse it to the temporary folder you noted above to get windows to start the installation with the correct driver.

    Reboot, your done.

Thanks to all for the comments and help!

After d/loading the 3082 driver exec file from Nvidia's site,
I put it in its own folder on the HD, then right-clicked it,
selected "extract to folder..." to examine the contents (as if I
knew what I was looking for!). There was no readme file..

I then turned off all other programs and double-clicked the 3082
    exec file.......

    It really was that easy!

Of course I had to reset the desktop res and reboot, as expected.

So I now have the display screen with the GeForce tabs etc. that
I never had before, which makes earlier threads about tweaking
    these options more understandable:D

Thanks again for all the help!

Most drivers now are .exe's... but before with win98, it was best to first change to vga drivers.. reboot.. THEN change to the new drivers. That was pretty much elimiated with the executable drivers....

    Hi,

I usually went through the routine of uninstalling and using 'Det destroyer' but this lot of drivers installed first time from the .exe, overwrote the old ones as well - caught me out a bit but nothing missing or wrong and running like a dream.

Go on just click that install button.
