I would say definately widescreen. I went from a 19" LCD Dell square flat panel to a 22" LCD widescreen Westinghouse flat panel and I have to say it made my gaming experience much better. It gives you a much better view of the cockpit compared to a square display. I got my Westinghouse 22" at bestbuy like 2 months ago for $179.00 which I felt was an awesome price. I would say that Westinghouse is a good brand because I have a 27" Westinghouse HDTV LCD for playing xbox 360 and watching tv and it has run nicely for 2 years now. I'm not saying that you have to run out and buy a westinghouse but they usually are affordable and have decent quality. Hope this helps.

Go with the widescreen. I use a HP 21" widescreen, and will never go back to a small screen.

    Hi,
I'm about to change my IIyama 19" monitor (tube) which provides me a wonderfull picture quality for years.
I wonder if a "tft" monitor will provide me a so nice picture ?
I have some questions without answer... Please can you reply ?

    1) Is a " 5 ms " really sufficient or do I need to go for a " 2 ms " TFT ?

    2) Don't the "WIDE" screen distort the cockpit ?
( in FS, the cockpit use many vertical space and left very poor space for windscreen.
It looks strange to reduce the vertical space which is already missing !

    3) A more wide screen mean "a more higher resolution" and perhaps a loss in fps ?

    4) Why not to buy a 26" HDTV LCD for playing Flight Simulator ?

The monitor is the masterpiece of our hardware. All you do on a pc is visual (except music). Many people seems to forget it...

Thank you for your advices !

    Hi,

Something sure, 19" is a minimum for a 4/3 screen.

If you want to have the same height (essential for FSim) you will have to choice a "wide screen" with 24" minimum...

    1. "normal," but that's just my opinion, I might consider a widescreen

    2. 19in is plenty for my eyes hehe

    3. Viewsonic, Samsung, Dell,

    Heres a link to a nicely-priced widescreen:

I bought my 19 in 4:3 LCD about 1.5 years ago, it cost 330 bucks. Look what you can get for 230 bucks today :)

I can highly recommend the 20" Dell widescreen ultrasharp 2007WFP; I've been using it for over a year with FS9 & FSX with no problems and excellent quality. No, widescreen doesn't distort anything at least in my case.

I would say go with the biggest widescreen you can afford. The trend is bigger! 24" monitors are not unusual these days. Heck, when I got this monitor in Nov. 2006, people thought a 20" was huge. Most of the time, brand does not matter - some brands you may never have heard of make amazing monitors. Look at the customer reviews on newegg.com

One last thing to consider - the bigger the monitor, the higher the native resolution is. If you want to get the full FS9/FSX experience from your monitor, you will most likely want to run at native resolution. But when you get up past 1680x1050, you will definitely need a high[er] end CPU & GPU to have it work well.

Let us know what you end up buying...I'll be in the market for a 22 or 24" prolly in the next 6 months or so. Have fun.
