Thread: New DVD burner, no audio with dvds

Default New DVD burner, no audio with dvds

I installed this new DVD burner for my wife and it reads stuff fine but does not play the audio when I insert a DVD movie. I tried different movies as well. It plays the video but no sounds.

What could be the problem? It is set to cable select (like her last 2ndary drive that was in there and I took that one out). The IDE cable and psu cable are in tight. I'm using Nero 7 essentials (comes with the drive) which I'm not too found of. Anyway, I don't know what's up. It plays CD audio just fine.

    Hi Ryan,

    Could be several things .....

Go to the Nero website, to check for the latest DVD Codec.

Make sure Your Sound control panel DOES NOT have 'play only digital checked.

Check Sound control panel that all tracks are turned up enough and that none are muted.

Just to be sure, did you plug the audio cable into the new DVD drive?

Odd ? - I've never seen one that doesn't use an audio cable (although it's not usually required) - Check again.

If still not, go to www.majorgeeks.com and download "VideoInspector" by KC Software (free). Run VideoInspector and browse to the Drive that contains the DVD then run the tool. Takes only seconds and it will tell You what Codec is missing for Your new DVD player and even where it can be downloaded.

    Let us know,

You don't mean the sound cable...like the one that goes from your sound card or onboard sound to your speakers right???

    Hi Ryan,

This is not that easy of a subject and so I sympathize, I've got two DVD drives that I may check out with Randy's suggested codec tools. Dur, I'm a little behind in this area also.

My one computer that is set up correctly and I watch too many dvd's with, has an extremely complex setup, I don't think that this is necessary but this is what I've got. The dvd rom has an audio cable running from the dvd rom to the regular sound card, then another cable over to a special dvd video card (dur don't ask me, I'm just a sim pilot heehee) that has an S cable out if I want to put it on a tv, an audio out plug, and two rca plugs which does something err other, maybe sound out to the tv or vcr, and has an external power supply plug in (never used it, just use the audio out plug). The main video card also has a broad flat cable going out to the dvd video card. I just watch the dvd's off of my regular computer monitor video card, but I get the sound from the dvd video card audio out plug. As I said I don't think all that is necessary.

A computer tech told me that those audio cables are not used much any more, as I was purchasing one from her for a cdrom on another computer. I have an audio cable coming off of my dvd drive. Such an audio cable is cheap, check w/ your local computer shop, it can't hurt to get one, doesn't cost much any way. Read your dvd and sound card manuals.

I just got a cdrw drive that is supposed to be defective, I'm trying to see if I can get it to work. It's from 2005, it should be nice (Memorex), so far it only plays cd music disks, won't open up anything else. Might be just cranky, I'm going to shut off the computer and start it again, keeping my fingers crossed. There's no shortage of computer problems.

Here's a better link for the VideoInspector by KC Software > http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?download about the 5th one down the list .....

Keep in mind, it won't trouble shoot the hardware, only the video file it's self. So be sure to have a DVD movie in the new drive (not running) then start the tool and browse (point) it to that Drive with the DVD ROM in, then run the tool.

Yeah I guess I've never seen a cable before from the burner to sound card

My wife's sound is onboard. I can't hear her dvd audio play.

My sound is Creative X-fi. I don't have an audio cable, I can hear my audio play.

    onboard vs. add in card???

What does it even look like? You plug the cable into the rear of the DVD drive onto the mobo?? Is it this:

    here's a pic of hers:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...bezel+-+Retail

Would it have something to do with the fact that hers is on cable select, sharing the IDe cable with anothre CD drive and one hard drive?

I only have one optical drive and my HDD is SATA of course.

That's the cable Ryan - A local Radio Shack will save the shipping versus newegg - OR - Send a self addressed stamped envolope and I'll send You a couple of them for free (I have probably 20+ of them around)

Yes, If You click on the newegg player link You posted above, then look at the picture showing the back of the player, You can see were the cable plugs in - from there Yes, it plugs to the Mother Board 'Audio In connection.
