Thread: widescreen LCDs with FS

  1. Default widescreen LCDs with FS

my workplace received an upgrade that includes a 22" widescreen
Samsungs, it is awesome to work on, but how is it with FS? anybody uses it with FS at home? my concern is, oval gauges on the flightdeck instead of the round ones, and the panel view itself may look strange on a widescreen (stratched...).
Please post a screenshots of panelviews as it appears on the widescreen LCD, then I'll decide for my self...

I'm using a Samsung 215TW for FS at its native res of 1680 X 1050.
I too was concerned about the stretching of round dials when I was considering the switch to a widescreen mon. In actual practice, though, the amount of stretching is minimal as you can see in the screen shots. The shots, BTW, were re-sized to maintain close to the same aspect ratio as that of 1680 X 1050.

hello Noel, thanks very much for the shots, I was able to conclude that the gauges are ovalic indeed, maybe this monitor isn't good for my taste after all...

to know for sure, I would have to see a shot of one analogue airliner cockpit (captainsim/tinmouse...) and one shot of PMDG 747 or 737 cockpit, (sorry for not specifying this the first time).

and another question, is the height of a 22" widescreen actually smaller the the height of a normal 21"? It seems to me that the height of a widescreen 22" is like that of a normal 19", please confirm on this.

I too have a Samsung 226BW. When you say "height" I am assuming you mean actual screen height here. Dims on the 226BW are 11 3/4" H, 18 3/4 W. On my Sony 19" CRT the actual screen dims are 11" H, 14 1/2" W. So the 22" WS is real close to a 19" CRT in height.

I fly the Flight 1 PC-12 a lot, and the cockpit is beautiful with widescreen and very little pinch. The Lear default virtual cockpit works well, but others like the default Baron or Mooney don’t look so great in 2D panels, but 3D panels work well. I’d like to see how 767 PIC looks. Hmmm… something to think about depending on which variant you prefer using (I use 2D for takeoffs/landings and 3D for everything else).

Sorry I can’t help you more, but taking screens from a 19” or 22” seems to turn out the same pic, at least with my swap experiment with the PC-12 (first is 19” with drop menu up, second is 22”; both using 1680x1050 rez in the sim). When taking screens however, both shots looked almost entirely exact when processing through edit software.

Edited for DUH.. no wonder both pics looked the same, I never changed the rez in the sim! I'll try again tomorrow. Getting late!

I fly airliners in 2D only, that's why it was important to me to see the pics. As an alternative, I also consider a regular 20"/21", which costs about the same and is larger in height. However without a shot of an airliner panel on a 22" widescreen, dicision is not possible :(
