sound problems fs2002,fs9

Having problems with no engine sound on some but not all a/c on subject sims.Wheel take-off sound exist but no engine.Sound files look normal.Tried substituting other known working sound files with same results.Tried re-installing some a/c ,(cd's), that were problems with same results.
Also went back with system restore...same results.
I'm using win Me on a Compaq 5006,766mhz with 383mb memory & a creative labs sound card.

Need someone's expertise on what do to resolve.I have made no major HW or SW changes recently.

I am running fs9 but had similar sound problems. Tried all kinds of fixes then broke down and bought a new sound card. Problem solved. BTW, I went for cheap like less than $30.00US.
If you want to make certain it is the card before making a purchase maybe you can do a temporary swap with a known good card.

Yes...can't recall anything I did to create the problem.For me it's a very weird situation.A/C that had engine sound now does not.ATC also does not respond.I switched to onboard sound output & also to a separate audio system...same results.Checked drivers for for my creative labs card...seems OK.Nothing in the sound files appear abnormal.What gets me is that some A/C function normally.I can't find a clue!
Above re.fs9 but same exist for fs2002...both on same computer so I'm thinking of some common problem.Checked settings...sound properties..don't see anything odd.
Open for any inputs you may suggest.

Back to basics..

Can you play a CD or listen to sound from an internet site?
Is the sound OK in games other than FS2002/FS9?
If all of that is OK, there is basically nothing wrong with your sound system and that includes your sound card.

If you are only have problems with games (FS2002/FS9), then it is something common to them. What about DirectX 9? To check that, click Start and Run (that's the way its done in XP - not sure about ME) then type "dxdiag" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Next, select the Sound tab and then run Test DirectSound. Do the same with the Music tab.

If that the DirectX 9 tests do not run properly, re-install DirectX 9.

Other PC sounds OK.Ran dxdiag both sound & music.Both passed OK.
Open to any further ideas.

If you have checked the sound setting sliders in FS2002/FS9 and you only have problems with some aircraft, well that seems to point to a problem with some sound files for some aircraft.

You also said you tried re-installing some problem aircraft which did not fix the problem and you also said that ATC doesn't work and that has nothing to do with the aircraft files. All of that could indicate a file corruption problem with FS2002 and FS9 but how could the files of two separate programs get corrupted?

With such a confusing set of circumstances, I'm afraid I'm stumped on this one.

A couple of final questions, though - do the default aircraft in FS2002 and FS9 work OK? What about ATC with the default aircraft?

Noell,
Some default A/C work & some do not...both 2002 & fs9.ATC does not work on either.
A real perplexing problem! I appreciate your inputs.Maybe I'll reinstall fs9 & see what happens.
I think also it may be a time for a new PC,with a hot graphics card & try out fsx.
