Thread: FS2004 will no longer load....HELP ME! I'll go nuts!

Default FS2004 will no longer load....HELP ME! I'll go nuts!

    Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 583.72 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 2.40 GB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sys
    --------------------------------------
Today, when I started FS9, I received error message: "You do not have enough available memory. Flight Simulator will now exit. Run CleanDisk to free up additional space on your hard drive."

I ran clean disk. I still get the error message. Seems crazy since I have a 160GB hard drive, with only 30GB used.

Any help will be most appreciated!

    Thanks,

First, fully scan your system for viruses and spyware.

If that's OK, try a system restore to a date prior to when you had the problem.

Here is some Microsoft info on this particular error that you may find helpful:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B892610

Are you sure it is only FS9 with this problem? Try running other complex games or open multiple applications at once. If you have problems doing this, you may have a RAM problem. If you suspect a RAM problem, try running a RAM test program like Memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/).

aslo, have you tried deleting the fs9.cfg file and trying to start the sim? It wil rebuild one for you if it starts successfully. Good luck!

Thanks, QBallbandit. Had to a search for fs9.cfg 'cause I can never seem to remember where it is....got four results:
    One in C:\Documents and Folders\User\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9
    One in C:\Documents and Folders\Another user\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9(2)
One in same folder, except named fs9.txt(3)
    One in C:\Backup

I changed all four fs9.cfgs' names to fs9.BAK, and restarted Flight Simulator. No load. Same error message. I noticed that the sim did try to build a fs9.cfg in the first folder named above, but 0 bytes, so it couldn't see enough memory to even build the cfg file.

I could almost attest that I've read about pagefile problems before, but I cannot recall where. The pagefile is nothing more than free space on your HD that Windows uses to trade out files in running applications--at least that's my understanding. If that's the case, I can't figure out what's preventing it from "seeing" the 118GIG free space on my system!?

I tried noell's suggestion--went to Microsoft website, printed the instructions on how resolve this issue, followed them to the letter. My computer refuses to change the minimum and maximum pagefile space to zero. When I boot back up to reset in order to allow the computer to manage the pagefile, I notice at the bottom of the dialog box that nothing has changed (see info I posted at beginning of this thread).

Somehow I keep thinking this is a fairly simple issue to resolve, but I could be wrong.

Almost forgot---my computer lets me open several programs at once with no problem (AFCAD2.21,RWY12 Object Placer, Microsoft Word, and my browser stays open). So....??

I most appreciate your help, and welcome any other constructive ideas.

    Thanks again....

You are right - the page file is an extension to installed physical RAM and it gets used when a program runs out of installed RAM.

Believe me, I've tried every combo of page file size as well as letting the system manage the size and I really could not see any difference whatever way I went. Seeing you have 1GB of RAM, page file useage when running FS9 would be minimal if it gets used at all.

Have you tried setting the page file to "system managed"?
If not, it might be worth a try. Then re-boot and see if your error still shows up.

Did you try a system restore?

Noell...yes, I did set the page file to system manage and I've done a system restore. Still no load, and with error message out of memory.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-0

    What can I do?

    Thank you,

    I'm stumped right now too.
To help with further troubleshooting, provide your full system specs:

    Type of processor.
    Motherboard brand and model.
Type of RAM (1 module or 2?)
    Video card model
    Video driver version.
    Etc.

I'm thinking it could still be a RAM problem.
FS9 shoud start up and run with just one 512MB module installed.
So, if you are running two 512MB modules, try running with only one module installed in your first RAM socket (usually named A1).
In other words, test each module one at a time in socket A1.

    Bushpo4,

Its' my opinion that Windows' system should manage the size of the Virtual Memory, or page files, definitely! I once tried to get fancy on my old 486 w/ Win ME and tried to set the Virtual Memory or page files size manually and immediately ran into memory shortage notices, it was a fatal flaw dire situation in my case. I went to great lengths to switch it back to have Windows manage that, and never thought about touching that option again. Definitely switch that back to where Windows manages the Virtual Memory!

There are significant differences in the way Windows XP handles virtual memory (and many other things, BTW) compared to Windows ME. In a nutshell, ME was one dog of an operating system while XP does things much, much better.

There is absolutely no problem setting up a custom page file size in XP. It will work flawlessly. Or you can let XP manage it. The choice is yours. I've tried all combos of this but I can't really say I see any performance difference whichever way I went. That could be because Ive always operated with 1 to 2 GB of RAM thus minimizing page file usage.

As for setting up custom page files, guidelines from those with far more knowledge on the subject than I, say the best page file performance is obtained by putting the main page file on a separate, fast drive separate from the drive containing the operating system. This is the way I've operated for years with no problems. The size should be 2 to 2.5 times the size of installed RAM. The only thing to keep in mind in setting up a custom page file on a separate drive is to also maintain a small page file on the drive containing your operating system (usually C:). That's because some programs (and XP itself, I think) may require the presence of a page file on the same drive as the OS.

Just thought I'd point that out as Windows XP really does do a great job at handling user defined page files as long as the user follows a few basic rules when setting it up.
