Thread: Runnig FS2004 on second hard drive, drive D

Default Runnig FS2004 on second hard drive, drive D

I am replacing my MB with a new one, I also will be installing a new hard drive.
My old hard drive has FS2004 on it and all the addons and goodies you can imagine.
After I install the new hard drive and load Windows XP on it , this will be the master boot drive, drive C.
Then I will install the old hard drive with FS2004 already on it and this will be drive D.
My question is, can I run FS2004 off of the old drive D, and if so how do you do it.
The new drive C will be reserved for FSX.
Thanks for your thoughts on this,
    Dan

If I read you correctly, what you are planning on doing is a full re-install of XP to a new drive. That being the case, before you do anything you need to back up your data files. After that, install XP to your new drive, re-install all of your applications (including FS9 eventhough its on a different drive from XP) and then restore the data from your back-up files. When you install Windows, a new registry is created which will no longer contain the configuration settings required for your applications to run. That's why all applications must be re-installed after a windows re-install.

You may be able to edit the registry to make FS9 run from your drive D but, IMO, that would be a monumental task as not only FS9 but many of your add-ons write to the registry as well when they are installed.

So, unless someone has other ideas, I think the best and most reliable way is to do a full re-install of everything.

I want to run executables from the old disk such as Microsoft FS2004,
I have tons of addons and goodies and I want to use the new disk just for internet and photo, movie editing and other etc.

I did a search on the boot.ini, very helpful, If I edit the boot.ini file it will work using dual boot option...........
    Thanks, Dan

Regarding what you originally were talking about... No, it will not work. We are not talking about a dual-boot setup here.

As Noell said, if you install XP on a new drive, you will need to reinstall your application files all over again because your old registry file will have the wrong addressing. (C instead of D).

I would not even try to edit the registry to make FS9 to operate on the D drive in this case. You are more than likely to mess things up.

There is no way around this. You are going to have to reinstall FS9 on either the C or D drive.
