Thread: more Defragging needed?

    Default more Defragging needed?

Look at this pic of my HDD...I just finished defraggin the small portion tonight...Do I need to defrag again? Do I want a pure blue block and a pure white block (and of course green cannot be moved). Maybe someday we'll have resources for a better defragger.

    Thanks for help!

Defragging really just means making sure that each file is stored in one contiguous block. In this case, all of the files look like they are defragged properly. It's only when you get into optimizing applications that you will contiguous blue, or other colour, blocks.

How do the other 2 sections look Ryan? - You keeping them defragmented?

EDIT > Ah, I read again, and see you said 'small section of your drive. - Looks as if your staying on top of it.

**IF** you would like a better alternative to the Windows Disk Defragmenter Utility...There is a freeware version of Executive Software's Diskeeper:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Diskeeper_Lite_d1207.html

It has a neat "Boot Time" Defrag feature also which is a nice...

Edit: Ooops...Sorry...The Boot Time Feature is not avaliable on the Freeware "Lite" Version...I still think it's a good tool...

    Have Fun!!

If you ever need to defrag the pagefile, here is a free app that'll take care of it.

Ok, why would I want to do that? (Not being mean, just wondering what it does...)
    Thanks guys!

A fragmented paging file will slow the system down if it needs to get something that has been sent to the page file. The defragging program included in Windows won't touch the page file.

    loki,
I never realized that the swap/paging file was not included in the MS defrag routine. In my computer that file is 1536mb and after using the utility my FS is much faster and the graphics are beyond anything I have observed to date. Perhaps I've combined it with something else I've been experimenting with but for my system everything is excellent.

Thanks for the link. I've set it up to defrag the swap file everytime on bootup.

    A couple points...

As an operating system developer, I can tell you that defragmenting the pagefile serves little or no purpose. AFAIK Windows stores files in clusters of 4kB. A page in memory is 4kB. So each page will fit in one cluster. A sufficiently large contiguous set of pages will be required so rarely, that a fragmented page file will be barely noticed. You might see an effect if you have a reasonably little amount of RAM, and you have a program where it needs to very occasionally load a large amount of data - if it's done rarely enough then the OS memory manager is more likely to mark these pages as not present and save them to the page file, to free up physical memory. Also, defragmenting the page file: this file will become fragmented far faster than any other file on your system, particularly if you are low on RAM. Remember, this is being used to store random access data that isn't needed when the computer is turned off (ignoring the beautiful complication of hibernation) - and so all your 'defragmenting' is rendered null and void when you restart (actually, whenever you close/open a few more programs, or load more files, or very much else really).

Also, DiskKeeper Lite is essentially the program that's included in Windows. Possibly a newer version by now, but it is the same program.
