    Default Sidewinder

    Hi.

Just got given a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick, made originally for Win95. It installed ok until I came to use it. Now I can forget frames per second, I get seconds per frame.

Is this normal? Is this joystick (microsoft after all) useless for Flightsim? Or is there something to add to make it work without screwing up my frame rates?

No its not normal. The FF2 is commonly used for flight simmimg. I used the Sidewinder FF 2 joystick with FS2002 and with FS9 for a long time and had absolutely no problem with it. Foolishly, I sold it and got a Saitek X-52 now I wish I had my FF2 back.

Do you have the installation CD for it? That's all I remember using to set it up and it certainly didn't affect my frame rates.

    Hi Noell,

Yes, I have an installation disc but it says it's for Win95. I installed it using XP. Does that make a difference, and can I still use the Win95 installation disc?

    Thanks for your response.

    Hi Allen,

No drivers needed for XP. See install instructions from FS2004 Frequently Asked Questions below >

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    18. Why can't I use my Sidewinder joystick in FS9? It works fine with other programs.

After the installation of FS9 go into the Windows Device Manager, find the Sidewinder and update the driver: choose Sidewinder (auto detect)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------

However, FS2004, does not support Force Feedback, so you have to disable the Force feed back, on the joystick, or you'll see the anomaly your seeing with your frame rates.

    Hi Randy.

Updated drivers - told me best are already installed.

How do I disable force feedback. System won't allow me to instal installation disc and there doesn't seem to be a help file on the disc. Result - no instructions.

Talks of Profile Activator, Profile Editor, Users Guide, but all these are on the installation disc which, as I said, I can't instal.

    Thanks again.

    Start FS9 and click "Settings".
    Click "Joystick Forces".
    Un-check "ground bumps"

HI Allan: I don't have a solution for your dilemma. However, according to my FF2 "paper" owners manual which is over 80 pages and printed in at least 17 languages, (over 3 years old) the software I have is "designed for Windows 98 or later." The stick has a USB 2.0 plug. I can't find anywhere in the manual any mention of NOT having to use the CD for installation.

I have the Force Feedback ENABLED and it works GREAT. I wouldn't be without it. Hope this doesn't make things even more foggy. Cheers: SPOFF
