Hi all,
silly question time. What are the advantages (if any) in compressing the drive/partition that FS9 sits on?

It uses less disk space and some folks have said their textures load faster. I tried it once and found absolutely no noticeable difference. All mileage is, of course, variable....

Hi Bob,
The only advantage I know of is saving drive space.
I can think of a few disadvantages right off - slower file loading times - easier and more extensive file damage when a cluster goes missing.
I think a search of the forum here for file compression will bring up a thread or two on exactly this subject
Cheers,
Kelly
Thanks Doug and Kelly,
after some searching (should have done in the first place) and reading of threads, I think I'll give it a miss as the disadvantages out weigh the advantages for my aging system.

Hello,
I "fly" with FS9 folder compressed for months with success.
My system is "old" also.

Bob, I have an older system too (PIV 1.6G- Radeon 7200) and I do reasonably well with it (payware - scenery - VATSIM) - my secret - 2 XP installations - 1 for FS only and 1 for everthing else.
The XP - FS Only partition is set up with limited XP services No antivirus (never check my email or download files from this anyway + I can scan it from the main XP part.) - just the firewall and a few other bits - otherwise the OS here is bare-bones and helps out alot with performance/quality.

Kelly
It has been 2 years I ran my FS9 on the primary partition without any compression. Many times the result was aggravating and uninstall was the only option. The problems were constant stuttering and slow load texturing. Two months ago, I decided to try installing FS9 on a separate partition and compress the folder. The initial result was encouraging. No more stuttering and load time was significantly reduced. So, I installed more addons (more than 15 gigs) to see if the result still holds. Still no stuttering. I’m very pleased with result and the flying experience has immersed tremendously.
From what I understand, it could be the separate partition where FS9 sits has a lot to do with it. The compression works and nothing much was done to the FS9 cfg.

Hi,
I too have run FS9 for months (and months) with compressed
folders. No problems at all. Certainly saves on disk space!!!
Even my games HD, likes of Doom, Far Cry etc - No Probs!!
