Default LCD monitors - more screen image?

Just a quick question that the forums dont seem to answer:

I have a 22" Philips CRT and its good. In measuring the screen though, i discover diagonally that the measurment is 20" and the width horizontally is 16"!!!

I feel ripped! So then, all the hype about 24" wide screens and 20" Dell LCD's as recommended by Andrew Herd, is the viewing area bigger or the same as my 22"?

If so, then i'm better off getting rid of this 22" monitor and getting a 20" flat screen that will not only save space but give me a bigger viewing area!

    Any thoughts chaps

    Regards

    Doug

Monitors are measured at the OUTSIDE of the tube - not the edges of the viewable area. Losing 2 inches for the case and mounting is about right for a CRT.

My 19" Viewsonic LCD measures just a hair short of 19" diagonal - a width of 15" and a height of 12" - as you can see from those numbers it almost has a traditional television 4x3 aspect ratio.

I believe FS would be much better on a 16x9 aspect ratio monitor - but the problem is that a traditional 1025x768 BMP for the panel is 4x3.

You need to have a 1365x768 BMP for your panel on a 16x9 aspect ration screen.

That said - I was skeptical about using an LCD over a large CRT.

Wish I had made the move sooner - and screen size has nothing to do with it - I love the LCD view.

And the extra desktop real estate.

Thanks for the reply, you've helped me greatly in the past so i appreciate your comments. Always well thoughout and concise.

I was wondering then, if i were to get one of theose 24" widescreen monitors, would the whole screen be filoled or would on ehave to tweak the config file to use all the space?

I'm not boffin when it comes to aspect ratios etc etc, so in laymans terms, what would i need to do to get the most of an LCD monitor?

    Cheers my friend

    Doug :)

LCD's use all the space. So a 17" LCD uses all 17" So thats why people say 17" LCD's = 19" CRT's and etc.

    Hey Doug,
This is from my answer in the PSS thread :)
As for the 24, it runs at 1920*1200 by default. It is not a fixed resolution though. You can still run 1280*1024 and 1600*1200 or even 1024*768 and the games that run at those resolutions still fill the entire screen. No black lines on the sides or top and bottom. If you run a lot of the 2D panels then you will definitely see distortion at the 1920*1200 resolution unless you can find panel .bmp's made for that resolution. If you run VC which I do then this monitor is mindblowing. You no longer only see half of the panel in the VC you see the entire plane and you get almost a full 180 degrees view out the front window. It almost adds the peripheral vision we lack so much in FS because it can fit so much on the screen at that resolution. If you can get a deal on it, I would highly reccomend it. Every person who has been over to see it is absolutely blown away by it and most importantly I love it.. Here is a link to a pic of the PMDG VC on the 24. http://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.html
    Hope that helps your decision...
    Good luck with it,

Unfair pictures - that's going to cost me a lot of money - and some major kissing up to the wife to get permission to spend it.
