    Default SATA HD upgrades

    Greetings and salutations to all:

I have Asus P4P800Se motherboard with 40Gig Hard drive(IDE) and slave 250meg HD from an old computer. Now I wanted to upgrade to 80gig SATA HD, and use it as primary boot hd and 40 Gig secondary. Do I set the 40Gig(IDE) as slave??? Of course I will not use any longer 250megs. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

SATA does NOT go onto your IDE cable. SATA is a different kind of cable that connects to a different connection on your motherboard.

You will probably have to consult your manual or the Asus website to get it working correctly. You are also going to have to reinstall Windows.

MadMaster, I think if you use Norton Ghost you can just transfer the information to the new hardrive, but Im not sure since this is from ATA to SATA so I don't know if it's different

Yeah, in your situation, I would probably stay with the IDE set-up - Although it is older tech, your 'opening a can of worms, by mixing drives, especially with an ASUS Motherboard - ASUS is lagging WAY behind other manufactures in the SATA technology, on their Motherboards.

Not meaning to take issue with anything others have said, but I have just about the same MB that you do and have extended what you suggest.

I have four 80GB harddrives in a Raid0 array configurtion including two SATA drives, plus two UIDE drives (See attached hardware listing). In addition to this I have two IDE drives for backup purposes. I don't know that they could work any better and am very pleased with them. I guess in my ignorance, I do not know what newer, or other manufacturer's MB's offer that is not included on your board.

Your ASUS manual gives full information on the hookups and options, plus there are a number of posts regarding your possibilities.

    Good luck:

That is correct. (Today I learned about Norton Ghost at work) If you have norton ghost you can make a copy of everything on your HD and transfer that over to a new HD.
