Thread: 4 CPU upgrade questions.

  1. #1

    Default 4 CPU upgrade questions.

next hardware I consider to upgrade is a CPU, man I'm so tired dealing with slideshow issues for years. Every time I upgrade, the fps imrove for a while, then it worsens again.

    OK, I have a 3.0 on P4800E

1). would 3.4 help my life in any way?
let's say I have 9-12 fps at a typical custom airport (payware, freeware, anything) with sliders NOT maxed. So, would 3.4 would give me 14-15 fps under the same conditiones?

To rephrase, I need a 3-4 fps improvement, would 3.4 do it or no? Only 3 fps, that's it, only 3 little ones.

2). does my mobo support 3.4? I heard my mobo's highest potential is 3.2. True or false?

    3). I haven't seen a 3.6 CPU with 478 socket, is 478 socket CPU kaput?

4). If my mobo does indeed support a 3.4, and I put it in, would I have to reinstall Windows again?

cpu. Your FR should never drop below 20. Find the problem, and save your money for a real upgrade, not 400mhz.

depands on how you use the sim...

for most freeware users, 2.8 is enough. If a guy flies Cessna out of gress airfield, then of course. But even over default cities, and airports like KORD and KJFK, no way you can get mythical 20fps, 16 on mine with fresh FS installation with no custom files added.

16 is ok though (14 is ok). Now add to that a bit of payware, such as ActiveSky, custom FSGenesis terrain, USRoads, and you're going to single digets.

I reinstalled windows twice since FS9 release (due to various upgrades), the issue is always there.

Anyway, questions 2 through 4 are still important to know. Hopefully, our forum's specialists will soon take a look into it.

    Sanyok,

I'm not one of the 'forum specialist, but I will try to give you my best advice................

#2 > You keep asking questions about your Mother Board - I supplied you with a link, a couple of weeks ago, to download the manual for your exact model MoBo - Why should one of the 'forum specialist "soon take a look into it" - Your Mobo -Your Problem - Why do you expect someone else to look up YOUR specifications, to see what your MoBo supports - YOU do it, with the manual you downloaded, when I supplied the link for you. ....Right?

    #4 > No

    Hope that helps,

I'd like to add that, a 3GHz processor is powerful and fast, but you've got to have good memory and a decent video card too. Your 9800 pro should do ok, because FS9 is MUCH more of a cpu intensive. But kc10 is right - 3 fps more should be had by tweaking things. To buy a whole new processor for 3 fps is...lol, well, let me help you - not smart. Try different drivers, (make sure you clean-up older drivers before installation of new ones), do a disk-cleanup, defrag, make sure you don't have more than (about) 30 processes running in the background (hit CTRL + ALT + DEL) to check on page file usage and processes. Don't be running all those messenging programs in the background (if you are, turn them off). Scan with an updated anti-virus program and make sure you don't have a virus, but I guess most importantly is make sure you aren't running other programs or your cpu is doing something else (ie. ripping/burning a cd, etc.) in the background while flying flight sim.

Finally, above all, try changing one setting at a time within the display option, texture, mesh, cloud complexity/draw distance, remember that AI TRAFFIC can make a night/day difference. If you are running anything more than 80% traffic, turn it down. I bet you'd gain 5-10 fps by setting AI traffic to 50% or so with a 3.0 GHz processor.

Just some things to try, let me know how it goes, good luck!

I have to agree that the rig isn't the problem here...

I don't know about KORD but at KSEA my rig was pulling 26-27 FPS with PAI installed and most settings maxed. It's a 3500+ Athlon64, 512MB RAM and a Radeon X800XT. Never seen single-digit framerates even with addons. Heck I almost never saw single-digit framerate on my old 2400+ system either.
