Default Change from 1024*768 to 1280*1024 resolution

    Hi,

I've finally gone from CRT to LCD display. I've always run in 1024*768 resolution but my new monitor is default 1280*1024. Trying 1024*768 is a joke as are any other resolutions. As the ratio of the screen is changed from 0.75 to 0.80 all my panels are stretched and round gauges are elliptical. I guess other LCD display users have experienced similar problems so before I do some drastic panel surgery, is there a quick fix for the problem?

    Andy,

Your LCD is in a native ratio of 5:4 at 1280x1024.

In order to run at any other resolution and not have distortion you will have to keep the 5:4 ratio.

For example, 1024 x 820 would maintain this ratio. This is assuming that your graphics card supports this resolution.

    Hope this helps,

    Steve,

Thanks for your reply. My graphics card does support many resolutions but the monitor only displays properly at 1280*1024. Anything else is blurred or ghosted. The display at default is crisp and pleasant to fly with but gauges are oval. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

    Cheers!

    Andy,

You have probably already done so, but just want to double check with you.

Have you made sure that you have set the screen resolution in FS2004 to match that of the monitor?

This should fix the oval gauges.

I also have an LCD that does 1280x1024.

1280x1024 is the native res for most mid-range LCDs which is unfortunate. The best choice is to get one that supports 1600x1200 (preferably) or 1280x960.

There are a few things you can do:

-Resize the panel (in FS by using the mouse to drag the window to the correct size, or edit the panel.cfg file to match the aspect ratio)

-You will notice that 2D panels are the only things that suffer from this problem. Displaying normal images on websites and such is not a problem (as long as you use the native resolution), and all 3D elements of FS2004 will also look correct. However the 2d panel bitmap will appear wrong because FS always stretches it to cover the screen. So if you use the VC, you won't have this problem.

-Just live with it. It doesn't take long to get used to the slightly odd shape of the gauges and soon you won't notice it at all

    Steve, JimmiG,

Thanks for your help. I guess that I just need to adjust my mind to the new screen aspect. It's already happening.

    Cheers!

    Hi JimmiG

If the LCD has a native res of 1600 x 1200 what happens when you set FS9 at 1024 x 768? Does it automatically enlarge to fill the screen but with a loss of definition?

Anyone's views with experience of this will be gratefully received.

As I understand it, many flat panel displays can only display a clear picture in their native resolution. Any other resolutions have to be expanded by your monitor's internal circuitry. I have a Hitachi CML174SXW 17" flat panel that has a "scaling engine" (manufacturer's term) that allows other resolutions to be displayed by expanding the desktop to fill the screen, but at a lower quality. This is a drawback to the flat panel design.
