    Default Which Graphics Card?

    Need some recommendations.

I have a P4, 1.6, 512RAM, WinXP Home, nVidia 64 meg GeForce2 MX Card. Will probably buy a newer system in the next few months, and give this one to the kids.

What Graphics card do people suggest?

    Ive seen recommendations for:

    ATI Radeon 9700
    ATI Radeon 9600

    GeForce 4 T. 4200
    GeForce FX 5750
    GeForce FX 5700

    Thanks in Advance

If have to have a new card new, go with the GeForce FX 5900XT, I wouldn't trade mine for anything short of a 6800 or X800. It's a bit pricier ($160-$180US), but well worth it. A few buck further will get you a Radeon 9800 Pro, which in FS, tends to preform at about the same level as the 5900XT.

If you're going to buy a new setup in a couple of months, then hold back on the card as well. There's big changes comming to PC architecture right now (Just read the thread on PCI Express), so waiting would probably net you a system that'll last longer.

For that system I wouldn't spend money on anything above a TI-4200 or ATI 9600 unless you're running a 21 inch monitor, have to have a lot of antialiasing and aniso, or both...

    I'm close enough.
    I have a P-4
    1.5gig
    512mb Rambus
    XP-Home
22" Mitsubishi Diamontron monitor 20" viewable
A few months ago I gave up my 64mb ATI and bought a AT Radeon 9800 Pro 128, the best move I ever made.
My view is sharper, I fly at 1600x1200x32 and my FPS showed a marked improvement. (4.8 catalyst drivers).
Next year (for the first time) I build a completely new machine and keep only the old monitor.

Thanks for the assistance. Please excuse my total ignorance on this subject. I'm using a 19" Monitor with 17" viewable. Would this make any difference in the suggestions for which card?

not really. you need to check how many watts your psu is first. if you have an OEM computer (like hp or dell) then you may need to replace the power supply to upgrade.

Just don't bother with anything over $200 for that system and monitor unless you plan on carrying the videocard over to your next system, or plan on getting a bigger monitor.

If you plan on doing either of the above then the sky's the limit...

I won't even get into the brand name and model debates.
