    Default PCI/AGP

I think this issue was brough up a few weeks ago, but I just installed my 6800 GT and everything seems to work just fine, however, under Control Panel it says that the location is PCI 1. I thought this would register as AGP...? Would this affect performance? How can I change this?

I have installed the 61.77 display drivers and also went into BIOS and made sure aperature was 128Mb and the preference was given to AGP.

    Thanks!

Have you run the directx diagnostics, press Start, Run..., type dxdiag, OK. Let it stabilize, ensure you are using DirectX9.0b or 9.0c, select the Display tab. Ensure Directdraw, Direct3d, and AGP acclerations are enabled. If grayed-out, you probably need to install or reinstall your MOBO controller chip drivers, i.e, Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi, NForce. Run the Directdraw and Direct3d test and note any problems. If none, don't concern yourself about PCI/AGP.

You can force AGP in your BIOS, but unless you are using more than one graphics adapter on your system, it is best left to PCI.

Depending on where in Control Panel, the AGP slot is usually identified as a PCI slot. In device manager, my AGP slot is listed as PCI 7. This isn't where you should be looking to see if your card is running in PCI mode vs AGP mode. Try looking in Display Properties|Settings|Advanced (or something like that). Look for the tab for your card should say something like GeForce 6800. On that tab you should see which bus the card is really on. Yours should probably say AGP 8X, if it says Bus: PCI, then you need to reinstall your AGP/motherboard drivers.

Ok, just wondering because flight sim seems to run well, but I feel like I'm getting slower fps than I should...taking off from the default Seattle Int'l, with traffic 100%, terrain mesh 100%, and most of the sliders to the right, mip map 5 hardware lights max and max frame rate, I get around 14-25..in the air in flight, I've seen it go up to 70 or so. I haven't created a hardware profile for this...should I? I guess I'm not sure what to set the 6800 at for optimal FS performance, or if there is a driver issue.

    PC3200 DDR400 1024 Mb RAM
    P4P800 SE
    PNY Geforce 6800 GT 256Mb

    No O/C'ing here, thanks!

    Hi,

I have a GF5950 ultra 256 and i get similar performance, i would not imagine you would get much greater. Seattle is tough on a gfx card due to the amount of detail. 25-30 fps is good at full sliders!

I think you are perhaps expecting too much, if FS is running fine, why are you worrying, don't fix what ain't broke. In computers you cauld cause more damage than you seeked to fix, trust me from experiece, don't go any further if FS is running fine!

    Hi,

One other thing, you could try putting everything (sliders) to nothing, then putting everything up agian gradually. I found that after i installed my card for the first time i got really bad performance. I reset the config by doing the above and now get 25-30fps in dense areas, 70fps in sparse, perhaps you have the same problem?

Thanks a lot for your time and help! After seeing the screenshot it's much more clear now. Yes, mine looks like the screenshot there, and was just curios if the PCI 1 was the AGP or that needed updating. Thanks!

Thanks John T. I've been puzzled for a while why device driver said that my FX5200 was in the PCI slot. Having seen your post and checked your screenshots, my set up is the same.

I guess that this must be normal as I too have seen similar posts a few months ago on the subject.

You may need to update your motherboards driver. That will get rid of the PCI message. That is, if it is in the Nvidia analogue display. If the Windows Device Manager say your card is located in PCI slot 1, that's okay, and they way it should be. See the screenshots below.

WARNING: I do NOT mean your BIOS, there is nothing wrong there.

Go to your motherboards manufacturer website, as they'll have the latest drivers.

WARNING: Make sure you have the correct drivers, if you don't you'll end with a problem similar to the post "Have I trashed my Computer" listed below. Read that post.

P.S. I would like to note that I don't use this PC for FS, this PC is used for the web only.
