Thread: First PCI Express Graphics Cards Arrive

  1. Default First PCI Express Graphics Cards Arrive

An interesting article about the new PCI graphic cards.
Personally I think it's a little to soon to judge them.
I'll wait a while until all the other "hardware" catches up then we should see the true speed.
Is anyone here using them with a greater success than AGP?

thanks for the article. the difference between the nvidia cards (AGP versus PCI-x) seems pretty much nonexistant, which has been what people have been predicting for a while now. it has been said many times that moving up to PCI-X won't really get you more performance at this point, but will simply give you more compatibility options in the future as you upgrade, since AGP will be phased out over the next few years. and even then for those of us that have just recently bought new AGP cards or mobos, i doubt the transition will be as problematic and difficult as some worry-bodies make it out to be.

If history repeats itself, again, then like ISA slots, PCI and AGP will hang around for a lot longer than you might think. It is true that AGP only supports the graphics market, but there are still a lot good AGP card just released that will be around for at least 2 or 3 more years. PCI Express is too pricey to be compelling at this point.

New motherboards and busses are not as compelling to users that are not gamers or power users.

Nor is it compelling to gamers and power users yet...

PCI express is meant to replace both PCI and AGP. It will be about 2 or 3 years until PCI express starts to take over and another 3 or 4 before it is completely gone.

I think as soon as BTX motherboards start arriving the death of PCI and AGP slots will begin.

I don't see PCI and AGP lingering the way ISA did.

Remember, PCI Express is supposedly backwards compatible with PCI cards...
