Default Problems updating Norton virus definitions

I am not sure this is the appropriate forum to discuss this matter, but I really need some help.

One week ago I found a virus which Norton Antivirus 2004 could not delete. I tried to follow the directions for deleting it manually and entered the 'regedit' feature.

I am not an expert in computers, so I think I made a big mistake there. I don't remember the name of the virus nor the registry I deleted.

Now, I try to update the virus definitions and I can't get connected with the Symantec site. When I run LiveUpdate, it tries to connect with liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com but it is impossible to connect with the host.

I can visit any internet website I want, but it is impossible to enter Symantec's website.

I un-installed and reinstalled Norton Antivirus 2004. It works ok, but the virus definitions are the ones that come by default (August 2003)

Any help?

-Are there any forums at www.symantec.com? They coul dbe of more use

-I don't know where the definition files are kept but if you tell me I will be happy to email the current file. I don't think there are
any copyright issues with that.

Good luck!

Hi, Karl:

"...-Are there any forums at www.symantec.com? They coul dbe of more use..."

Since I made that mistake, I can't connect with that website. I can visit any website I like but that one.

I am trying to remember what I did wrong. Maybe I deleted a registry of LiveUpdate. I had some pop-ups and thought that could be a fine way to avoid them...

"...-I don't know where the definition files are kept but if you tell me I will be happy to email the current file. I don't think there are any copyright issues with that..."

I don't know, either. I have another computer at home, and I will try to find where are those files kept. Maybe I can dowload them on that computer and pass them to mine.

Thanks a lot.

First try "system restore", go back as far as you can. If that doesn't work try the links below.

Why don't you go here and scan your system, download the right tool to clean it.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Then go here, dump your cookies, cache and history (no false readings), run it and then see if you can access Symantec.

Let us know how you did.
Good luck.

I think you may have learn't you're lesson here - DO NOT under any circumstances mess with you're registry unless you know exactly what you're doing. Even then it is vital you make backups. If you have to ask, you don't do.

Fantastic!!
Now activate your XP firewall (not ZoneAlarm) and as the man said don't mess with the registry (I don't).
If you want a safe good registry cleaner (use in NOVICE mode only) get regvac, try it out for a month.
