  1. Default Upgraded..now need help, please!!

Just upgradedd system from Athlon 1700XP/Rad 9600/512 Mgs RAM on win XP Pro to...

P4 3.2/Asus p4v800 mobo/1Gig Corsair DDR Ram/colermaster Jev4/and new powersupply for this system - retained the ATI 9600 Pro card

Before upgrade all was 100% but wanted to beat the FS stutters.

New system fine on ordinary PC duties/internet etc..but under FS and also Fighter Ace she locks up, crashes, or delivers 100% corrupted screens which indicate a graphics problem I reckon!

Getting a message to forward to ATI that graphics accelerator not(forgotten the words) but nort working with drivers. Well I am using the very latest Omegacorner drivers for Radeon.. One FS symtom is that the screen appears to freeze for severalseconds and then restarts usually followed by a similar event and then finally locks up. Other times the PC just goes dead in and instant and I am left with the monitor switched on but nothing else... I guess the prob lies in the graphics card/mobo relationship???

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. As I say the PC runs indefinitely on ordinary duties and cannot be faulted, its when the load goes on that problems occur...

    Many thanks

Did you install or reinstall the MOBO controller chip drivers, i.e., Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi, NForce. If not, download the latest drivers and install.

If so, press Start, Run..., type dxdiag, OK. Let the directx diagnostic stabilize, review the version (9.0b recommended), select display tab, ensure DirectDraw, Direct3d, and AGP accelerators are enabled. If grayed out, then reinstall the MOBO controller chip drivers. Run the Directdraw and Direct3d tests.

Not an easy problem to run down but here are some random thoughts which may, or may not, help. I'd replace the Omega drivers with the ATI Catalyst 4.1's or 4.2's just to insure that there is no driver issue. After installing the ATI drivers, reinstall DX9b (if you need to download it, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en ).What is the CPU temp? The CPU temp on the P4 shouldn't go over 60C even under a full load (70C is the max point at which the CPU will start to shutdown). If you need a temp monitoring program I'd recommend MBM5 which can be found here: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ . Is the Coolermaster fan running at full speed? Is the power supply fan tuning? The problem is symptomatic of a heat-induced CPU or power supply failure (but it could be other things as well). It's not likely with a P4 that it's shutting down, but as the CPU fan/cooler is aftermarket anything is possible. If you still have the Intel fan/cooler I'd install it to eliminate that possibility as well. If you don't have the Intel HSF, using a small bit of Arctic Silver on the Coolermaster would also eliminate the possibility of a paste problem (be sure and clean it first). How big is the new power supply? It needs to be 300+W minimum "to be sure". Check the fan on the 9600 to be sure it's still turning - the card will probably still work for a while with no fan but not under a load of any kind. Check all the case fans to be sure they are working. And be sure the cables inside the case aren't blocking the airflow in any way. Remove and reseat the video card. Leave the PCI slot closest to the video card empty (eliminates a possible airflow problem). Reinstall the chipset drivers for the P4 (probably a waste of time but any-port-in-a-storm).
