Thread: Graphic Settings

  1. Default Graphic Settings

    Hey Everyone,

I know you guys are probably getting sick and tired of all these posts regarding graphics settings but here is another one. I have searched through the forum and tried everything to get my frame rates up to about 10-12 but no luck. I tinkered with all the detail settings, fiddled with my graphics card, and installed the replacement cloud textures. I even shut down everything in my task manager except for Explorer and System Tray when running the game. With all this, I still only get about 3 frames per second on approach to JFK with a Boeing 737. My system specs are:

    - PIII 866mHz
    - nVidia GeForce2 MX400 64MB Video Card
    - 384 MB SDRAM
    - 20GB Hard Drive (6GB Free)

Below is a screen shot of all my settings in the display windows. Upgrading is not an option right now and I am looking for a blend between preformance and functionality (I.E.: I want the taxiway signs, terminal buildings and some major landmarks to fly VFR by). If anyone could please help me it would be a great help.

    Cheers,
    Josh

Your settings look about right. I would move the mipmapping to 5.
My last pc was similar to yours: P3 1.0 / GF2 mx 400, and aircraft shadows killed my fps,and so did transform/lighting. And I had to keep AI under 70%.
Have you experimented with 16 bit instead of 32? Lots of people say they see no difference in quality.

Josh: With RAM pretty inexpensive today I'd go for at least 512 but more is better as they say. I ran a 900Mhz rig with 512RAM but had a Nvidia 4200 graphics card so was still somewhat restricted in what I could move the sliders to. For example I note you have MIP mapping at 8 I used 4. Also I unchecked aircraft cast shadows. Clouds really eat up the frame rates and I'm sure you can live with 25 % there... it all helps. It takes time but I found that if I carefully moved the sliders one at a time and checked back to see the effect the adjustment had on the FPS I eventually arrived at a point that I was able to maintain 10-15 in heavy detail scenery. Oh and I had water effect at 0 but most of the other sliders were quite a bit higher than you show. Unfortunately no two computers unless they are identical in all respects will come up with a perfect solution for you. Unfortunately I've just upgraded so now cannot show you my exact settings.
    good luck
    Gary

    Hi Josh,

My older PC, was similar to yours, and here's what I would recommend as far as settings goes...
    **SCENERY***
Terrain mesh : anywhere from 0-50, wont hurt
Terrain texture size: medium is fine for VFR flight
    special effects detail: low
autogen density: none (has nothing to do with VFR objects)
uncheck sun lens flare (just another thing to render)

    **AIRCRAFT**
    virtual cockpit: lowest quality
uncheck relflections and shadows, you dont need those unless you spend extended amounts of time looking at your aircraft...lol

    **WEATHER**
global wx quality, ultra low, or whatever, you need 2D clouds with that PC...sorry, thats what my 1 Ghz runs

    **HARDWARE**
    FPS slider to unlimited
    uncheck anti-aliasing
    resolution, 1024x768x16 should be fine
    mip mapping @ 4 or 5

That should help you gain some FPS....however, realize that you probably wont get 10 FPS on approach into KJFK, especially if you have AI traffic turned on...I'm on a P3 1.2 Ghz laptop, and it runs bad. Good Luck!!
