grayed out Device name?

I have installed FS9 on a Dell 8250 (3.06 GHz / 1 GHz RAM) with XP and an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. When I go to the Display settings, under the Hardware tab the Device name is grayed out and blank. DXdiag shows that everything is OK and it passes all the tests. How do I tell FS9 what kind of card I have?

You may need to install more current video card drivers. How long have you had the card. The original 9700Pro's shipped with DX8 drivers. They won't work with FS9. I originally had the Cat 2.3 drivers which wouldn't work. Install the most current set.

One of our least favorite Christmas traditions is for me to come down and mess up my father's machine while I am "fixing" things, so I was a bit hesitant about jumping into a machine, OS, hardware and drivers that I don't use myself -- but you were rignt on the money.
Needing new drivers was, indeed, the problem. I put in the latest Catalyst 3.10 and everything registered OK. He's up and flying.
