I'm sure there are those who will disagree with me but, I have to say that assuming they are both of good quality, the larger display will be better for your eyes.
I'd agree. For the sizes that you are choosing between, I would go with the 17" CRT. Generally, bigger is better...however, if you were choosing between a 19" LCD and a 21" CRT, then the choices start to get a little more difficult to make. Sometimes a 19" LCD looks better than a 21" CRT.

Flat panel CRT's are much better for gaming...resolution and refresh rates are cleaner, and trust me I just got a 18 inch viewable flat panel, and it blows away my friends 21 inch fancy lcd flat screen..:7

The answer to your question really has to be answered by YOU.
Best strategy is to compare the options at a store and go from there.
Monitor type is a very personal decision.
I agree with Zoynyne. There are pluses and minuses between both; and it all depends greatly on your taste. LCD's are more vivid, but, lack the higher refresh rates and resolution rates. LCD's, you get the true viewable screen size whereas CRT's you get lower than the actual size. (ie: LCD 15" is 15".. CRT 15" is 14.1" or 14.7" or whatever actual)LCDs have a tremendously smaller footprint than CRTs. (Rule of thumb, CRT screen measurement is the same as length measurement. (how deep from front to back the monitor is)) LCD's are more expensive than their CRT counterparts. And so on and so on.
a 15" LCD is a 17" CRT in terms of Screen space. I would opt for the LCD at the moment. Be sure get one with a good response time or you will have a thing called ' ghosting ' occuring.
