Default Takeoff Problem and Slew Mode Problem

I reinstalled FS9 and everything seems to be working fine. However, I have two problems:

On takeoff, when I release the brakes and give it throttle, the aircraft (doesn't matter which one I am flying - they all do it) immediately begins its takeoff run by making about a 45-degree left turn. It will not go straight ahead, down the runway and take off.

(I have encountered this problem before in previous versions of FS and used to know how to fix it - but I seem to have forgotten the solution. I think it has something to do with the joystick sensitivity settings (null zone). I tried reducing the null zone for the rudder to zero, but that had no effect.)

Second problem: Whenever I press the Y key to enter into the slew mode, the plane immediately begins backing up at a high rate of speed. If I let it go long enough, it will actually take off in reverse, gradually gaining altitude - a perfect takeoff, but at very high speed and in reverse.

(With regard to this problem, I think I just may have something "on" that shouldn't be on - but I have no idea what it is. Or, that may not be the cause of the problem at all; I don't know - that's why I am putting the question up here.)

These are both rather basic questions, and I have been a flight sim enthusiast long enough so that I should know the solutions - but I don't, sad to say.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

    Mike

Well, forget about Problem No. 1 - planes veering to the left while taxiing during takeoff. I was right. Setting the null zone in the joystick sensitivities window solves that one. You have to maximize the null zone, not minimize it.

But I am still shaking my head on the slewing problem. For the life of me, I can't figure that one out. If the plane is on the runway, and you press the Y key, it SHOULD rise off the runway a couple of feet and just sit there. You can then slew it anywhere you like.

When I press Y, the aircraft immediately starts moving backwards at a high rate of speed. It does it whether I have num lock on or off - doesn't make any difference.

    Help!

    HI Mike,
I know that if my yoke is not calibrated exatcly, or the trim wheel on the yoke is not centered,as I enter slew mode, the plane will move backwards like 30 kts.
If that happens I just push forward on the stick and the movement stops.

I will then recalibrate ans it is ok.

That may be a clue why yours is going backwards. As you enter Slew, FS 'sees' one of the controls asyou want to move that direction, even though you are not touching it.

Since you had the problem in the null for the rudder control, could you ser the null for the elevator? That is usually the control that moved the plane forward and back. It might be out of adjustment and making the plane move back.

Another unlikely cause would be a stuck key on the number pad like the 3 ley? That may give an indication you want to move back.
Check the elevator null and recalibrate. Hope that works,
    Gary.

This sounds like the solution. I go now to see if it is. Will report back. Thanks a lot!

    Gary:

Can't thank you enough! I maximized the null zone for the elvator (and also for the ailerons, while I was at it), saved the changes and now it does exactly what it is supposed to do when I hit the Y key.

I remember when I first started with FS 4.0 - the null zone settings gave me problems then and they continue to do so to date.

Anyway, problem solved. Thank you very much.
