Thread: Annoying Gear Alarm Sound

    Default Annoying Gear Alarm Sound

Is there a way to deactivate the gear alarm that sounds continuously, without interruption for minutes at a time when I begin my descent? I understand the logic behind it, but how about letting me deactivate it. OKAY, OKAY, I NEED TO PUT THE GEAR DOWN, I GET IT. But I don't like to lower my gear 25 miles out just because I've put out some flaps and dropped below 200 KIAS.

    Just wondering if anyone knew.

    Thanks.

In Richard Probst's 727 panel and some other more sophisticated panels there is a disable button to push to temporarily turn off warnings. Not sure how to do it with the others, though. I usually just add a little throttle so the engines aren't at idle.

There is a way to fix this problem if you care to edit the .air file. I use AirEd as the file editor. I'm using FS2002, but I assume the .air file has few, if any, changes.

First, open the .air file and scroll down to section 325, named "Gear_warning". There are three items that you can revise.

    1. Horn volume - Reduce this value if the volume is annoying.
    2. Flaps Angle (rad) - Gear not down
    3. Flaps Angle (rad) - Closed throttle

Items 2. and 3. are flap limits for the gear alarm. The angles are measured in radians, not degrees. To convert from degrees to radians, just divide degrees by 57.3.

Example: Assume your aircraft has flap settings of 10, 20, 30 and 40 degrees. When the throttle is closed, you may want the gear alarm to sound only if the flaps are set higher than 30 degrees. In that case, I would set the limit to about 35 degrees (0.61 radians).

If you don't want to mess around with the flap values, just set the horn volume to zero. Later, after you've skidded to a stop on your belly, you can go back and adjust the flap values.

    Hope this helps.

    You're welcome!

I just remembered that FS2004 has a way to make some of those changes in the aircraft.cfg file.

The .cfg file now has a section named (gear_warning_system). It looks to me like you may not be able to adjust the volume of the alarm, but the flap values can be changed.

If you can't find that section in the aircraft needing the change, look at some of the default aircraft.cfg files for an example.
