The joys of modern aviation technology.

A friend of mine drives 777s for BA. It must be incredible, to command such powerful engines and such a huge aircraft. I get a buzz just from driving a Landrover!

    Yup, really awesome!
I remember seeing a documentary about the developing of those engines. They had a cannon/slingshot thingy throwing everithing from slabs of ice to chicken, sheep and even a cow through it and it kept going, amazing!

I think that is the GE90 or the RR trent (900)?? those things are masivly powerful. Over 100K pounds of thrust at TO power. Just think what Orvile and Wilbur would think of things like this and the A380. Quite a jump from the Wright Flyer.

They are GE90s. If you want an instant tip RR engines rotate clockwise when viewed from the front, GE PW rotate backwards. Thats why RR get better fuel consumption :-)

GEAE GE Aircraft engines and Boeing are both customers of mine. I had the honor of seeing one of the 777 engines on the brace at the GEAE plant in Cincinnati being run unitl it seized. They do it with all engines to know exactly how long they can run constant before failiure. This particiular engine had been going for 22 hours when I saw it. You can fit the fuselage of a 737 inside the 777 engine i believe. You should see them building these things...
I also found it inteerseting that with a car enigne they tell us to break it in by taking it easy for the first 1000 miles whereas with an aircraft engine the first thing they do is crank it up to full blast so everything can seat properly.
    Isn't technology amazing...

I'm sorry, but no engine could survive a cow being thrown into it.
