Thread: Turn Off Runway Lights?

  1. Default Turn Off Runway Lights?

    Is there a way to turn off runway lights that appear in the daytime? I've always had what appear to be like ball-shaped lights at the end and middle of the runways, either orange or yellow. They don't seem realistic, so I'd like to eliminate them. Are there certain files that can be deleted to accomplish this?

    That doesn't sound like runway lights, which are white, with taxiway lights being blue. And I've never seen what you describe. Does this occur at all airports? Do you have add-ons at the airports where it occurs? Or could you be talking about the VASI (or PAPI), which are red and white at the touchdown zone (usually to the left of the runway), and the red/white changes depending on your approach path?

    They are the VASI lights. I never noticed them changing color, and wasn't familiar with their purpose. Now that I know, they are fine as is. Guess you learn something new every day!

    While you cannot "turn 'em off," you can easily adjust the SIZE of the lights:

    To change runway lighting, add the following to the [Display] section of the FS9.cfg:

    RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=1.0 //scales edge,center,end,touchdown, runways

    RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=1.0 // scales VASI lights
    RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=1.0 // scales approach light bars
    RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=1.0 //scales RAILs and ODALs

    The smaller the number, the smaller the point of light.

    I suspect that setting the scalar to 0.0001 would make 'em tiny enough to not be seen! ;)

    Where does it go exactly in the FS9.cfg? I assume the info after the // does not get added?

    The "Read Me First" post pinned at the top of this forum has that information and much more.

    All the // does is mark a "comment," so yes, it may be left in...

    In fact, I recommend using //comments as much as possible to help jog the old memory! :)
