Thread: Im not real sure what this is

  1. Default Im not real sure what this is

Can someone help me on a sectional chart. I have the New Orleans Sectional and im lookin at the aera right around KPFN Panama City just west of the Tyndall MOA. There is a grey Hash mark with 70/05 AGL. My best guess of what this is is a military area from 500ft to 7,000ft AGL. But does this mean it is restricted or can you fly through it? I cant find anything on the sectional about it. Any help would be great!

Edit: OK I did find this listed at the bottom of the chart (should have checked there first). But this still doesnt answer whether or not you can fly through them.

    "Special Military Activity
This chart identifies IFR military traininy routes and Military Operations Area within which the Department of Defense conducts periodic operations involving unmaned aerospace vehicles. These vehicles are escorted by military tactical type aircraft which, as necessary, exercise overide flight control of these unmanned vehicles. Status of these routes and areas may be obtained by contacting the FAA/DOD facility on designated frequencies along the routes and as depicted on this chart. The lateral limits of these specified routes are shown by the Special Use Aispace symbol."

While it's legal to fly through MOAs, it's best to check with the controlling agency to find if they are active, and if so you should avoid it. When active there will likely be high speed jet traffic doing almost any kind of maneuvering at almost any altitude within the MOA, often at speeds well above the usual low level speed limits, and I can guarantee that a military jet can be very difficult to spot, especially in the extremely short time you would have to "see and avoid."

Not only might they have unmanned aircraft, they could have almost any kind of military training operations except those using live ordnance.

In FS it doesn't much matter, but in real life an active MOA is, at best, hazardous to your health.

I appreciate the advice on the MOA but I dont beleive this area to be a MOA. The best I can get out of it is its a protected military traing route. But ive never seen a Military training route with a protected area around it. Not sure if you are able to fly through this or not.

Not sure what this area is, but rule of thumb is to avoid any areas like MOAs or their ilk. The question is not so much if you can fly through it, but why would I want to risk it?

The only problem with flying around or above this area is it encircles PFN. There is no way around it, plus id have to climb over 7,000 AGL to get over it. Although this is not hard to do I would be heading west which would mean 8,500ft. I would like to keep a consistant altitude.
